Sharing Seane Corn’s statement with you here so that this mindful community can get her perspective, not just her Facebook community, which apparently gets first dibs (!). I was with her last night when she and others met with a longtime employee and rep of the Hyatt Boycott. Tough situation, best handled with clarity, integrity and an intention of supporting legitimate concerns, creating peace and understanding.
Just arrived in SF for the YJ conference.
Yesterday members of Off the Mat met with union organizers to learn more about the labor dispute and boycott.
After listening and learning I want to publicly acknowledge my ongoing support to the workers and believe fully in this boycott. Although I have elected, at my own expense, to stay at a different hotel, my contract obligates me to teach at the Hyatt. I also feel a deep responsibility and heartfelt respect to the students who have traveled far and spent their hard earned money to spend time with me. I intend to honor my responsibilities and teach. I also commit myself and the leadership of OTM to long term support that includes joining the boycott and inviting others to join with us, working with the union to raise awareness about the dispute, augmenting my future contracts to acknowledge labor disputes and provide me an “out” without being in breach, as well as confirm that I will not teach at the 2014 SF YJ Conference, or any other conference, if they’re held at the Hyatt and the boycott is still in place.
I also want to acknowledge my dear friends at YJ who organize the conference. I recognize that they are in a very tough position and I appreciate the support they have shown me and their willingness to be open to exploring a further dialogue around this issue.
