And the historic bill gets a big thumbs up from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The above meme was posted by Emanuel’s staff on the Mayor’s office Facebook page yesterday after the Illinois Senate passed the bill 34 – 21.

On a more serious note, Emanuel gave this statement:

“The freedom to marry the person you love is one that should be afforded to all citizens and, for too long, has been denied to our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters. When two people love each other, no government entity should stand in the way of letting them express that love.”

Governor Pat Quinn has already given indications that he will approve the bill if it passes in the House, and has encouraged House members to vote in favor of the bill:

“The Senate took a stand for equal rights for all people. I urge the House of Representatives to pass this legislation so that we can ensure Illinois is a welcoming place for everyone. Full equality for all people is right for Illinois.”

Illinois would be the 10th state to extend marriage rights to all citizens.
