“Our adversaries call their campaigns ‘in defense of marriage’ or ‘in protection of marriage.’ Why are they so defensive and protective? Are their marriages so fragile?” ~ George Takei

Oh, how I love George Takei—who has become, perhaps, this Nation’s most-outspoken (and brilliantly cheeky) advocate of same-sex marriage.

This was his reply to the article, “20 Young People Who Believe Marriage Should Be Between One Man And One Woman“—in one word, it is simply brilliant.

Thank you, George Takei!

And can we please just recognize all of these most beautiful expressions of love in this world?

Wonderful! humor is the cure for 20 year old stiff and serious Bible thumping, misspelling, critical of others youth. Just let everyone figure out what makes them happy!

I'm always disappointed that those who wave the banner of tolerance the strongest are often only interested in other's tolerance of their own "sacred" causes. Though I don't agree with the religious arguments against gay relationships, I wonder why George Takei can't be tolerant of the religious views of these young people. I was shocked by his racial intolerance in calling one dark-skinned kid a Vulcan.

George is not only un-funny, he is shooting both himself and his cause in the foot.

      Ken,

The idea that George Takei is using a racially motivated attack on the student in question here seems to me a mis-analysis of the his humor and a patently false accusation. As to the question of why can't he "tolerate" there religious view? Well, pardon me for saying it- but if its their religious view that has them out demonstrating as opponents of equal liberties in a pluralistic democratic society, I think he's asking the right questions.
Let's bear in mind the level of intolerance that has historically been leveled at LGBTI folks due to ignorance, misinformation, fear, and out-right zenophobic hatred. Finally, Although he is a wonderful icon to bring levity to a social issue that often times lacks any shred of it- let alone level-headedness- the "movement' towards justice does not require Takei or any other spokesperson invidividually to champion the cause. What it requires is all of us to deeply poner what is the nature of fairness?

You realize, Ken, that you're referring to a man whose entire family was interned just 3 months following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and solely based on *his* race? His family lost everything while neighbors looted through all of the family belongings—trampling through their house, viewing them not was 'humans' but 'criminals.'

p.s. – I think he was referring to his slicked down bangs and slightly pointed ears…

  5. “Among people who believe that there is only one truth-and they are in possession of it-tolerating other points of view is, by definition, impossible.” – Hella Winston (from her book Unchosen The Hidden Lives of Hasidic Rebels)

George is one cool cat! He has lived through some of the worst eras in regards to racism and still has a sense of humor.
