“They have more money than you and this is what they do.”

Good fortune—whether inheritance, success, health, love—can make us generous, noblesse oblige, we can appreciate our lives…or we can show off and form cliques to keep losers out and close ourselves to reality and revel in our lazy unearned and hoarded privilege…and in so doing, we lose our own life, lonely, eating our gold and dying of a starved soul.

And 10 Wise Quotes on Wealth:

In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of. In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed of. ~ Confucius

“The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.” ~ Bob Marley

“Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all God’s children.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

“No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable” ~ Adam Smith

“There is the moral of all human tales;” “Tis but the same rehearsal of the past, First Freedom, and then Glory — when that fails, Wealth, vice, corruption, — barbarism at last. And History, with all her volumes vast, Hath but one page” ~ Lord Byron

Ill fares the land, to hastening ills a prey, Where wealth accumulates, and men decay. ~  Oliver Goldsmith

“We can either have democracy in this country or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can’t have both.” ~ Louis Brandeis U.S. Supreme Court Justice

I love and celebrate this. Thank you for sharing.

I also appreciate the reminder about the things that are important in this life. Far, far beyond material wealth. I certainly didn't have this kind of upbringing, and I'm far, far away from this kind of material wealth, but I also try to remember, as I've learned, that had I been born into those conditions…had I been raised in that environment, those photos could also be mine. Who knows? I certainly don't.

  3. God, this doesn't even make me jealous, but it does make my stomach curl up in disgust. Ewww.

  4. eyogi says:

But the more important question is, "why does it matter to us?" If we are striving for enlightment and non-attachment, we could and observe this from far away without feeling affected by it. I don't think we should celebrate it or put it down. It just is. Any reaction we have to it is merely a reflection of something inside of us, isn't it?

    • randolphr says:

Not merely, at least not necessarily so. That reflection/reaction could lead to something valuable, to something worth sharing, maybe even to an idea worth acting upon. Maybe even to something that could be helpful to others.
If it stems from something inside you, no harm no foul. The world around us is not without value or meaning.
If it is ultimately illusion, then so be it. But let that be a conclusion that draws itself. Doing so as a part of process may actually be just another selfish action of which we as Humans are terribly prone to make.

The quotes are so good, I have to say that I felt better after I threw up a little in my mouth looking at the pictures. Wish I had just read the quotes!!
