I love Colbert!
I watch the Colbert Report all the time. He is a brilliant satirist. But, the key to being a brilliant satirist is tied to the ability to not break character, and therefore, despite watching his show regularly for years, I don’t know anything about what the man is really like.
This is awesome! This is a glimpse behind the mask, and the person we find there is pretty freakin’ awesome.
Every month, Rookie invites a celebrity guest to answer questions from their audience, for their video blog “Ask a Grown (Man or Woman).” This time, it was Stephen Colbert’s turn. He did not, as I thought he might, attend the interview in character. Instead, he gave us his raw and real self.
And that’s not just interesting for people like me as a fan of his show. It’s really important and valuable. He gave honest, genuine and thoughtful responses to some tough questions from young girls and women who wrote in with questions like, “Why do guys make mean jokes about women?” The classic, “How do I tell if a guy likes me?” and the oh-so-complicated, “Why won’t my dad let me sleep at my boyfriend’s house?”
Colbert’s answers reveal him to be a kind, intelligent person, sensitive to the feelings of others and what’s more, a feminist! He gives the girls who wrote in some good tools and a healthy perspective from a “grown man.”
So, give the video a quick watch. Meet the real Colbert. You’ll be glad you did.
