Do you have a crush on the alphabet? Interested in growing an online community? Are you a stickler for punctuation? Do you condescend at emoticons and fear ALL CAPS?

Every four months, we take on a new crew of social media troublemakers and writers. Our apprentices are elephant readers and writers from around the world who are self-starters, inquisitive communicators, respect the written word and are viscerally inspired by elephant’s mission: bringing together all those working (and playing) to create enlightened society.

Unlike many other social media/new media/journalism ethics training programs, your teachers—our editors—are active in the constantly evolving field of journalism and new media. With elephant, you’ll get hands-on social media experience, resources to study, weekly meetings with editor-in-chief Waylon Lewis and elephant’s team of editors and weekly small group meeting with our dedicated teaching assistants.

There’s no “busy work” that is extraneous to our duty to train you in social media, new media, journalism ethics and writing/editing.

elephant has won numerous national awards (voted #1 in US on twitter, twice, for #green coverage, among others), and connects with millions of readers every month.

Apprenticing with elephant is a feather in your career cap and can help you get a job or further your social media and writing skills for your existing job, company or path.

You will receive a calligraphed, eco-printed “Elephant Academy: Certificate of Apprenticeship” upon completion of your four-month training program.

Requirements

1. You will take on one or two elephant journal focus areas on social media (Green, Adventure, Wellness, Family, Ecofashion, Food, Bicycling, Politics, Culture and more—we cover just about all aspects of the mindful life).

2. The apprenticeship requires 15 hours every week with a commitment of four months.

3. You will attend a one-hour weekly meeting (every Monday at 5:30pm MST or, for international applicants, every Tuesday at 10:00am London time. Due to our online format, meetings can be attended from anywhere in the world. You must consistently be able to make only one of these meeting times, though occasional absences can be made up after class). Meetings include training, discussion, peer edits and random harangues by elephant editors and Waylon Lewis. You will also meet with a small group once a week, wherein you’ll apply skills learned during the weekly meeting with writing exercises, discussion and Q & A.

4. You must have a reliable connection to the internet and access to a working computer on a regular basis.

5. We have fun and laugh a lot, but we also take our work seriously. We have a one strike policy (we don’t work with one-foot-in one-foot-outers or flakes). So only jump if you can commit.

Payment Details

Program fee: $500. Note: no payment is required until after we formally accept your application. Since we use rolling admission, full payment is required within one week of your acceptance e-mail to reserve your spot. From your acceptance until one week after the Academy starts, if you decide the program isn’t for you, you’ll receive 75% back. After one week, the program fee is non-refundable. If you need to leave for health or other unavoidable reasons, you can complete a later apprentice program.

Interested?

Apply using our online application by December 20th, 2015. We’ll get back to you within one week. Send questions to [email protected].

Yours in the Vision of Enlightened Society,

Caroline Beaton
& Waylon Lewis & tous les elephants.
