About: Kate Bartolotta

Profile
Kate Bartolotta is the strongest girl in the world. She is the love child of a pirate and a roller derby queen. She hails from the second star to the right. She doesn't know how to behave with all the apples and ibexes. She doesn't suffer from her eight million freckles, she loves them! She drinks her lemonade right from the jug. Like a rolling stone, Kate gathers no moss. Kate loves kale, being barefoot, Dr. Seuss, singing too loudly, gallivanting, palindromes, blackberries, Elvis Presley, magic tricks and (of course) elephants. She has been charged with (and found guilty of) overusing the exclamation point! When she's not writing, you can find her practicing yoga, running in the woods, playing with her kids, devouring a book, planting dandelions, changing the world and doing her dishes. Kate does not play the accordion. She is on her way to becoming a fabulous massage therapist, a mediocre writer and a compassionate friend to all. This year Kate aspires to finally give up on learning to knit and will instead spend that time writing for elephant journal. Connect with Kate on Facebook and Twitter

How to Love a Girl who Writes.

by on Apr 28, 2013

Much has been made of dating a girl who reads, but what of the other side of that coin? For a girl who writes is a double-threat: she is well read, yet creates worlds of her own as well. If you find a girl who writes—find her charming, wish to court her—there are a [...]

“Yoga is about learning to pay attention. The rest is just decoration.” Reflections on the Yoga Journal Conference in NYC.

by on Apr 12, 2013

It’s a funny thing, the whole idea of packing a weekend full of yoga events. In a way, it’s the opposite of what yoga’s all about. When I went to last year’s Yoga Journal conference, it was the first conference I had been to on that scale. I had been to more local and regional [...]

FEMEN Stages Topless Jihad: “I own my body; it’s not the source of anyone’s honor.”

by on Apr 5, 2013

What we deem “offensive” says much about our values. No doubt, there may be some who find the photos below offensive. I challenge you, though, to take a minute and consider the larger picture here. Amina Tyler, Tunisian feminist activist, sparked a controversy a few weeks ago by posting semi-naked pictures of herself with these [...]

What Do We Need to Know about the “Monsanto Protection” Rider?

by on Mar 28, 2013

Yesterday, I read and edited Kevin Macku’s article on the recent HR 933 legislation and was saddened but eager to get this information out to our readers. Today, post some negative responses, including one from Waylon Lewis, I decided to dig in a little deeper and read the bill for myself. Here is what I [...]

Why I Didn’t Change My Profile Picture Today.

by on Mar 26, 2013

In case you haven’t looked at the news (or Facebook) recently, today is a big day for marriage equality. There was a time when I thought that since I was straight, marriage equality wasn’t my problem. Most of my gay friends weren’t at a point in life where they wanted to settle down and get [...]

There’s No Sex in Your Violence.

by on Mar 21, 2013

Part of me feels like since I’ve never been raped, I somehow don’t have the right to address this. But I don’t have to have experienced rape to know that there’s a world of difference between pleasurable, consensual sex and being tortured while you are passed out. Here’s the thing, with all the discussion about [...]

This is what Rape Culture Looks Like.

by on Mar 18, 2013

I’m all for giving people second chances. We all made foolish choices in high school, and some of us may have even hurt people. But this? This is inexcusable. This is worse than the boys taking pictures while they abused this girl. This is a society-wide statement that we are willing to sanction rape. [...]

Way to go, Colorado! Civil Union Bill Helps Families Find Equality.

by on Mar 13, 2013

As Representative Mark Ferrandino, Colorado’s first openly-gay Speaker of the House, so eloquently stated:

“This bill is about three simple things,”… “It’s about love, it’s about family, and it’s about equality under the law.”

Much Ado About Joss Whedon. {First Official Trailer}

by on Mar 7, 2013

Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more. The pairing one might only dream of has happened: Whedon plus Shakespeare. I’ll admit it, I’m a bit of a fangirl. I was always more of a Firefly/Serenity fan than of Buffy and Angel, but really, Joss Whedon is one of my favorite writers/producers/directors of this…umm…ever. Dollhouse was [...]

We Are Not Here to Fix Each Other.

by on Mar 6, 2013

“If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.” ~ E.B. White

An elephant Love Story.

by on Feb 14, 2013

“The minute I heard my first love story,
I started looking for you, not knowing
how blind that was.
Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere.
They’re in each other all along.” ~ Rumi

Valentine Cards for You.

“It matters not who you love, where you love, why you love, when you love or how you love, it matters only that you love” ~ John Lennon

10 Mindful & Fun Things to Do instead of Watching the Super Bowl.

by on Feb 3, 2013

I like to think of the Super Bowl as a commercial special with a little bit of football in between. Sort of like the sports people’s version of the Oscars. In fact, I often use Super Bowl Sunday to see any of the Oscar noms that I haven’t watched yet.

How to Set Your Heart on Fire.

by on Jan 29, 2013

May you have just as much fire as you need today. May it burn away anything that doesn’t serve you. May the spark that’s left in your heart be wildly contagious—may you set the world on fire.

How to Love your Morning at 5:30 A.M.

by on Jan 28, 2013

Whether your Tuesday starts too early, too late or right on time, may you listen to what your body and mind are asking for. Whether it’s quiet sweetness or fire on full blast, may you have a song that fills you up. And whenever they present themselves, may you always pick the strawberries.

Lions, Fish, Practice & Permanence.

by on Jan 24, 2013

“The depth of the practice can’t be seen in asana. Somebody that can do a backbend and grab onto their ankles isn’t going to be further ahead in their practice than somebody who has trouble forward bending. That doesn’t make a difference—that’s not what the practice is about.” ~ David Robson I am sitting [...]

So What Do Gomukhasana & Joseph Campbell Have in Common?

by on Jan 21, 2013

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances without own innermost being and reality, so that we actually [...]

A Love Letter to My Hamstrings.

by on Jan 19, 2013

I was taught as a child to believe that my body was a temple. Then I thought that only meant I should treat it like a museum or somewhere quiet and uptight, somewhere solemn. What I believe now is that it is a temple to celebrate, to take delight in.

I’m 99% Sure Patanjali Didn’t Give a List of “Yoga Stuff” We Need to Have.

by on Jan 17, 2013

I can practice pretty much anywhere. In warm weather, when I go running near the lake, I usually rip off the sweatiest parts of what I’m wearing, do some sun salutations and jump in. I don’t bring a mat; the ground works just fine. I like the yoga gear I’ve accumulated, but realistically, most of [...]

Same Bliss, Different Day.

by on Jan 16, 2013

“Illuminated emancipation,
freedom,
unalloyed and untainted bliss await you,
but you have to choose to embark on the Inward Journey to discover it.”
~ B.K.S. Iyengar

What’s the Difference Between Yoga Nidra & a Nap?

by on Jan 15, 2013

I don’t usually have any trouble sleeping. I love sleeping. Falling asleep and the seconds just before is one of my favorite things. I even made a sleep playlist awhile back. Falling asleep is easy, most of the time. I do sometimes, however, have trouble going to bed. I’ve shifted to practicing a little earlier [...]
