Bo Jackson: five bikes, five days.
On my way to support Bo Bikes Bama, I watched the movie We Bought a Zoo, a true story directed by Cameron Crowe. Matt Damon delivered my favorite line of the film:
“You know, sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage. Just literally 20 seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.”
This week, I’ve worked alongside Bo Jackson, ESPN, regular folks, serious cyclists and some of my all time favorite sports celebrities like Scottie Pippen, Ken Griffey Jr. and Picabo Street. What we share in common is awe for the people of Alabama that survived the tornado a year ago April 27th. These people show immense bravery day by day just 20 seconds at a time.
Yoga works like that too, we move from macro to micro. We take things one pose at a time, one breath at a time.
We only need 20 seconds of courage to face our challenges. If you take any difficulty and measure it out in 20 seconds you will immediately find it more manageable.
That’s how the trip organizer, Rebecca Falls of Trek Travel, designed this trip. She took 300 miles across the worst tornado-ravaged areas of Alabama and organized it into small do-able parts: cycle, break one, cycle, lunch, cycle, break two, cycle, finish line.
Bo even had a custom, Project One Trek bike made specially for him each day. Monday were his Auburn alma mater colors of orange and blue; Tuesday was white; Wednesday was pink for breast cancer awareness. Each day had a special intention, and each bike had all of the individual names of those that lost their lives last year.
All of this was done in an effort to raise $1 million for the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund.
In yoga, we go from macro to micro and at the end of class we make our transition from micro back to macro. We leave feeling like an important part of the greater community.
Watching Bo Bikes Bama is like that too. We come together as separate individuals but also create a group energy. The intentions behind each of Bo’s bikes form together to create a bigger vision.
May we all feel at ease with how the little moments of our lives form the whole embodying only 20 seconds of courage to be alive. Please consider how your effort at home in your pj’s could make a huge difference by donating to this incredible event here.
