Waylon chats with Maria Kang, a Fit Mom who received a lot of backlash for her “What’s Your Excuse?” photo.
Elephant is psyched to be working in partnership with Google+ on our new live video series, which features three live videos a week (that can be watched later, too).
Maria Kang is a mother of three boys born in 2009, 2010 and 2011. She graduated with two Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Davis and now owns two residential care-homes for the elderly. In 2007, she founded a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit for kids called Fitness without Borders. In 2009 she began a free Mom-Me Fit Club, where moms workout and enjoy playtime with their children in the park. In 2012 she won a Mayor’s Volunteer award for organizing the Mom-Me Fit Club and making a positive contribution to her community of Elk Grove, California.
In 2013 she was featured on several national and international media streams for her motivational Facebook picture that went insanely viral. Elephant journal blogged about Maria Kang, here and here, as a Fit Mom who received a lot of backlash for her “What’s Your Excuse?” photo.
At the beginning of 2014, Maria came out with a Fit Mom Swimsuit Calendar featuring 24 everyday mothers who represent various sizes, shapes and ages. These mothers proudly show their mommy marks and provide tips on exercise, eating and time management. This endeavor began before her photo went viral and promotes her consistent message that one’s health should be a priority.
A few weeks ago she also launched No Excuse Mom and already has over 500 Free No Excuse Mom workout locations and 20 countries on board. This grassroots movement—according to Maria, will empower families, one mother at a time.
