I believe it's the misogyny inherent in our society. Women/girls learn from day one that man = good, woman = bad.

If you "throw like a girl," that's bad. You may be called a c*nt or a p*ssy; even lady parts are bad. On the other hand, if you "take it like a man," that's good, if you need to "grow a pair" (you lack male genitals), that's bad. You have to "man up" to be respected.

In addition, girls/women are brainwashed by commercials that they see many times a day, every day. They had better look young, slim, have loads of beautiful hair, wear Victoria's Secret undies, hide their wrinkles. Every day we see this sh*t. But do you ever see commercials for men's eye cream, revitalizing cream, plumping cream, shampoo, etc? Men can be paunchy, wrinkly, or bald and they are still relevant. But Angela Merkel, prime minister of Germany, is criticized for her "frumpy" look. Really? She's the f*cking prime minister.

I could go on and on. I hope you get the picture.

Kat thnx . Just wondering why do women require this? Being told they are beautiful. Men don’t usually feel this way, the need to be told. Do you think it’s a men are from Mars women from Venus thing? Or women are not appreciated in this male dominated society? Just wondering ?? Thnx

    anonymous Mar 13, 2015 9:23am

That is a very good question, Kirti. I am not sure if it is a Mars-Venus thing. It is more like a societal thing. If we just think about movies, there seems to be less pressure on men. Actors at 50, 60, 70 still can be considered hot or handsome, it is okay for them to show up with a beer belly or be unshaved. There is more pressure on actresses, they either disappear past let's say 40 or in the best case "look good for their age". I can't just blame the media for it, it is somehow I vicious cycle all around. I think it is possible the relatively new pressure on women to be good everywhere: hold a full-time job, take care of the kids and house, yet, still be healthy, look sexy and be amazing all around. A lot of women feel crushed under this expectation. Also, simply the word "beautiful" is usually used for women. Men are more likely to be "handsome" or "hot" or "strong" etc, even though they are certainly just as beautiful perfect creatures of the Universe as women are. This piece was prompted by a Facebook discussion I observed on what is beautiful (in women), hence I wrote it for women. I feel the same about men too.:) We are all beautiful with a beautiful essence.
