Update:

Music Mogul Russell Simmons Is Accused of Rape by 3 Women. In this response:

“I have enormous respect for the women’s movement worldwide and their struggle for respect, dignity, equality and power.”

He’s so full of shit. Read the rest of his response in the NY Times article above.

The sketchiest, skeeziest person I’ve ever had the displeasure to interview.

Breaking in the LA Times and the front page of Reddit.com/r/news this morning: “Russell Simmons Allegedly Assaulted 17-Year-Old Model While Brett Ratner Watched.”

Glad to see allegations come out about Russell Simmons’s countless forced sexual acts (you know, rape) in the LA Times—he’s the sketchiest, skeeziest person I’ve ever had the displeasure to interview.

Russell’s response:

Remember, he dated (later married) a 17-year-old, too—when he was 35.

A reminder: Anything that the models or LA Times or anyone says about Russell Simmons is still alleged—it still has to be established in a court of law. Democracies are not mob rule. That said, anyone who’s been affected by him in these ways, hopefully, can feel the bravery to come forward through Twitter or Facebook—or Elephant, or their own writing on their own site. We need to change this culture of fear to one of facts and accountability.

Many comments here.

As I write about in my book, which is about the Buddhist notion of love, this is the best thing in the world—sex, intimacy, love, connection, vulnerability—and you can only access the best thing by being kind. You can’t get love or intimacy or vulnerability through aggression or abuse of power.

My conversation with him at his new Venus Flytrap of a yoga studio:

My reaction to Louis CK’s apology. This will involve swearing.

Bonus:

Bonus, this just in: Terry Crews was allegedly sexually assaulted by a prominent industry leader. Russell Simmons told him to “give the agent a pass.” Here’s Terry Crews’ reply:

Terry Crews says Russell Simmons asked him to give target of sexual-assault allegations ‘a pass’.

Relephant:

Two more Major Figures accused of Sexual Assault or Harassment.

Waylon, I've been reading and following your page/site for a while. I am legitimately frightene. It's like I tell my kids, "if mom is calm and not worried about it/situation, then you should be too, but if you see me in a panic, you better run your butts off" I'm legit, running my butt off. I trust you and your word. And when I see you afraid/concerned/ and alarmed...holy crap is the most I can come up with. Also, I want to give my deepest sympathies and love to your coworker. I'm sure you can't say much about what happened to her, hoping she is recovering and getting to a place of trust and healing. On a note to you, its not your fault. Good men like you, take on the responsibility of, "I was right there and it still happened to her" maybe I'm wrong, and I hope I am..but a predator will always be a predatory.... even if you were there. Please let her know, I believe her. Women sometimes internalize and put guilt on ourselves that somehow we encouraged or "asked for it".

I met Russell Simmons in the late 80's/early 90's when he lived on Broadway a few blocks south of Astor Place. He invited my friend to a party he was throwing in his loft because he knew her from the block and she invited me. They seemed to run into each other at McDonald's a lot. My friend intrigued him because she's 5'11 with bright red matte lips and gorgeous green eyes. At the time, the area was sketchy. "Loft" wasn't a ritzy term; it was a huge place with temporary walls forming makeshift bedrooms. Here's what I witnessed: young girls walking around topless, at best, being pinched, smacked, spanked, touched, and f*cked in all sorts of inappropriate ways by the male guests - in plain sight. While not prostitutes, they obviously thought that being around RS would get them some kind of recognition in the industry and were very uncomfortably semi-willing to put up with it in hopes they would get into a music video. or something. They were exploited, and I'm sure, scared to disobey. When asked if we wanted something, I asked for a coke. He laughed. It's not "a" coke - it's "coke". But instead, he suggested I freebase. My gf and I declined. The level of crudeness exceeded anything I have ever seen to this day. The men there were just as uncomfortable as the women, but no one dared really tell him so. We didn't stay long, explaining we were going to other clubs that night, maybe Nell's or The Knitting Factory or some illegal party in an abandoned building. We were pawed as we left, called prudes, uptight white girls (although we're Puerto Rican) and given t-shirt souvenirs that said, "On your knees, b*tch - I ain't through with you yet!!" In his later attempts to put an angelic face on his nasty self, whether with Kimora or yoga studios, or his Namaste bs, what always stayed with me was the most absolutely disgusting night I have ever spent in anyone's presence. ,A week of showers was barely enough to get his filth out of my aura, and over 25 years later I still remember that night as one of the lowest in my life, just by being in his presence. He was, and is, a vile excuse for a human being who thought nothing of demoralizing and using others just because he could, through force or fear. Thank you for sharing your experience. "Skeezy" is way too polite a word to describe who he is at his core.
