Senators, What will you Tell your Children?

The second day of the second impeachment trial—for the incitement of insurrection at the Capital, geared to stop the peaceful transition of power—was illuminating.

Jamie Raskin and co. are brilliant.

They wove together sentiment with common sense and a great deal of personal vulnerability, creating a seamless prosecution of the 45th President of the United States, Donald John Trump.

However, as I watched, enraptured, as Capitol police officers exhibit the bravery I’ve only read about in history books, I was reminded of Biden’s campaign for the “soul of America.”

It’s a hard fact to acknowledge that a huge chunk of America’s soul idolizes one man over the love of our neighbors. We know which senators’ votes have been bought from fear and ambition. We are seeing whom, among the Republican Party, honor their roots as the party on the right side of history in this new civil war. It makes me sick to my stomach that some blatantly disregard the physical and mental sacrifice of our public servants in the face of that mob. That mob. The racist, insurrectionist, Thin. Blue. Line. Mob.

Whatever our disagreements on policy, or even the role of religious beliefs in government—we should all be able to agree that Donald Trump was a mistake.

He was a con artist who sought to exacerbate the worst qualities of American culture for personal gain. Maybe he was the kick in the ass we needed to, finally, move forward. Regardless, he cannot continue to be marketed to the masses as a false idol by ambitious politicians and Fox News. His criminality is vast and blatant. Any allegiance to him in the face of the evidence Jamie Raskin and the impeachment team have laid out is centered in hubris or the pursuit of personal gain.

Let’s be clear though, this support is expected. Fifty people will have the ability to speak for all conservatives when they vote to acquit a president so ostentatiously guilty of the charged crimes. That is, unless you write or call your senators to let them know that isn’t what you stand for. Conservatism used to be founded in common sense and good morals—not conspiracy theories.

Look right. Look left. Watch the tapes roll. Are these the people you want your children around? The people you want at your dinner table? If not, maybe, senators, you are on the wrong side of the argument. At the end of the day, we all want to be able to look our children in the eyes and say that we did our best.

You want to tell your children that you did your duty. That you kept your oaths. That you protected them and the Republic that will be the foundation for their future. You didn’t hide behind procedural arguments nullified by a majority vote.

You want to be able to tell them, as we all do, that America is still beautiful. It is still brave.
