The Elephant in the room, sliding into the beast’s mouth when writing

Photo by Peter Olexa on Pexels.

Obstacles and fears can stop us from writing our heart out, not anymore.

Fears when writing, can become our best friends!

Let’s get real.

We are not talking of a cute light pink elephant for decor, but of that invisible yet so heavy Elephant in the room when it comes to writing.

What happens when we have much to convey, yet not a single ‘ hello page ‘ comes out.

What if we sound stupid? or even worst just plain ridiculous. What if people hate it? What if people reading this, cannot see in between the lines my clever jokes? What if my words don’t sound perfect? anyone relating to this?

This Elephant is more so related to the effect the words we are writing can have on others.

What if is a great writing piece? What if someone smiles while reading it? what if I love it? Maybe it can be of purpose. Possibly useful or inspiring? Perhaps it’s subtly funny and makes someone’s day a little brighter.

Maybe it makes us feel so good and confident, to put it out there despite not being sure about it. What if by not waiting to be perfect we become better?

We write to express but most importantly to connect. To add, to share something that can have value to someone’s eyes and with luck even be of service to their heart.

Here are a few techniques that have helped me address this not cute Elephant and start typing:

Shift your perspective

Like mentioned earlier, we can choose to focus on the positive outcome of our fears or just worry, what people will think of us. Who cares what we may sound like if we are being genuine and truthful? If our words can be of purpose, then the rest is just fluff!

Breathing

Breathe it out, sister! or brother! Be present. Let your body be filled with fresh air and remind you, this precious moment, is where we live right now.

Arrivederci distractions!

As simple as it sounds, minimize your distractions! Honor yourself by focusing on the task at hand. How can we write a powerful piece, when we are checking that cutie kittens page on our Instagram feed? guilty of charge.

Start

So simple yet powerful. Start typing, read it out loud,  if you don’t like something about it change it, that is the whole purpose of editing, to carve out what is not needed or to paint a picture better, by adding a smoother rhythm to our words.

What goes In, comes out

Just making a point (not trying to gross you and me out).

What we feed our minds with, is essential to what will come out of it later.

Read about things that make you feel happy. Brunch on purposeful posts.

Immerse yourself in paintings that bring you peace, smell the scent of your favorite flowers. Surround yourself with moments that add to your life. Exercise, meditation, maybe salsa dancing in your living room will freshen you up!

Having positive-purposeful input, can help us have more and brighter words to be shared.

So the next time you see those Elephants in the room, paint them pink, wink at them, and say: Hello, my friend!
