Get comfortable with being uncomfortable!

I don’t think the people who do uncomfortable things are not afraid of the consequences or sacrifices they have to make. Fear has a very concrete power of keeping us from doing and saying the things that are our purpose. You have to decide that fear is not going to dictate your life. Then, only then, you will see all your dreams become your reality. Yes, being quiet is comfortable! Keeping things the way they’ve been is comfortable. But remember, silence serves no one. Silence is the residue of fear! Silence is pain. There is no time to pick your battles when your battles have already chosen you. We should not let silence wrap itself around our indecision—most of the time, people around count on our silence to keep us exactly where we are. We always try telling people the things they want to hear. Likewise, we get comfortable telling the same to ourselves though we know that’s not our deepest heart. Being yourself can be a revolutionary act. In the world that wants our silence, choose to yell as I do now.

Why I chose to yell and how? – I was sexually abused as a child – I kept quiet. I was domestically abused for years – I kept quiet. I lost a child while being physically abused – I kept quiet. I was neglected because I chose to get divorced – I kept quiet. People tried taking advantage for loving myself and remaining single – I kept quiet. My son was called out with names because people around us never saw my son’s father – I kept quiet. I’m a person who knows what to do but dared not to say. I wanted people around me to accept me more than my dignity! I did things that I’m not proud of for that acceptance.

It took years to start exploring my silence. I worked towards filling those spaces, recognizing them, naming them, and understanding that they don’t have to be a source of shame and to be true to myself. It took years to break that silence and to walk into my strength.

I have these checkpoints to push myself out to be more uncomfortable, starting from why the thought even began in my mind, to –

  1. Is it going to make me better? – How?
  2. Does it scare me? – why?

I dug deeper into these questions and started taking action. Breaking the silence to get uncomfortable is difficult—one step at a time. But, trust me, it will all be worth it. Instead of giving up, all you ever need is to get comfortable with being uncomfortable in your own voice!
