A Poem for the Ones who aren’t here this Christmas.

Christmas

Christmas is supposed to be a special time of year, but for many who have lost loved ones, it is actually a really tough time.

For many of us, Christmas is filled with sad memories of someone who is no longer there. We all cope with grief in different ways, and whether we continue to celebrate Christmas as usual, or choose not to, they are both completely okay.

I have put together a poem in memory of all the ones who are no longer physically here during this festive season. And I want to remind you that you are not alone in your grief. We are all together in this because many of us have known this kind of suffering.

It’s supposed to be

the most wonderful time of the year

but it does not feel that way

now that you’re no longer here

there’s a missing place at the table

and the Christmas lights don’t shine so bright

as we eat our dinner

on this cold December’s night

The fire is still burning

and the wreaths are looking pretty on all the doors,

outside children’s faces are full of smiles

but that one special smile is missing, and it’s yours.

I watch as everyone opens their gifts

but I realize that gifts don’t mean a thing—

whatever is wrapped in a box will never

compare to the joy you used to bring

You know, on the Christmas tree

we have a special bauble with your name

and an image of you with a smile on your face

but still, it will never be the same

This time of year is always filled with laughter and tears

and although it is the hardest time to be apart

not a moment goes by

where you are not living in my heart

And so, on this white Christmas

whilst I am feeling quite blue

I will still try to celebrate

in beautiful memory of you.
