I Dare You to Play: Paranormal Games!

If you love the paranormal like I do, you might be feeling bummed that Halloween is still months away.  However, for die-hard (pun intended) fans of all things spooky, there’s no time like the present to satisfy that craving by playing a paranormal game!

For centuries, the brave (or foolhardy) have been summoning the supernatural through various rituals, or “games.”  During the Edo period in Japan, samurais used to play a game called “Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai” as a test of courage.  During the game, the players would sit in a room together, and one person at a time would tell a frightening ghost story.  The storyteller would then go into a separate room where there were 100 lit lanterns and a mirror on the table.  The storyteller would extinguish a lantern, look in the mirror, and then rejoin the other players.  As the game progressed, the room with the lanterns would grow darker, and players would often see something sinister looking back at them in the mirror.  After the final tale was told and the 100th lantern was extinguished, it was as if the spirits had received an invitation to enter the home and wreak all kinds of havoc.  Or so the story goes.

Paranormal games have become slumber party fixtures for generations, with eager participants summoning Bloody Mary in dark bathrooms, or talking to dead relatives while hunched over Ouija Boards,  or defying physics while playing “light as a feather, stiff as a board.”  Eventually, like everything else, paranormal games found their way to the Internet, to be copied and pasted and shared the world over.  For better or worse.

One such game, The Elevator Game, became firmly entrenched in urban legend after the tragic death of Elisa Lam, who was found floating in a water tank at The Cecil Hotel.  The last time she was seen alive was on an elevator security camera, and she was behaving erratically—hiding and talking to someone who wasn’t there.  Some people believe that what we were seeing in the video was Elisa playing the Elevator Game.  In this game, through pressing a series of buttons in an elevator, a player can be transported to an alternate dimension.  The player will know that the game has succeeded when the elevator opens and the hallway—which still looks identical to the one in the building—is completely dark.  And there, in the darkness, will be a glowing red cross.

Are you feeling curious?  I have included the instructions of two paranormal games, along with some background information about each of them: The Bathtub Game, and The Hide-and-Seek Game (sometimes called Hide-and-Seek Alone). If you do decide to try the games in a quest to amuse yourself, or in a quest to answer nagging questions that you might have about the afterlife and the existence of spirits, you play at your peril. I hereby absolve myself of any responsibility for the consequences – good or bad – that may result. After all, you have been warned.

The Bathtub Game

According to the legend, a woman known as Daruma-san fell in the bath and hit her right eye on the tap, which killed her.  In this game, a player summons her ghost while taking a bath, and then spends the rest of the day in a paranormal version of the game Red Light, Green Light.  If you play the game, Daruma-san’s ghost—with only one eye—will follow you around, moving closer and closer all day long, trying to catch you.  You might see her out of your peripheral vision—a dark-haired woman with rotting, wet skin.  No matter what, do not allow her to catch you.  Ever.  Are you ready to take a bath?

Minimum Number of Players: One

Materials: A full bathtub (a shower will not suffice), and towels or a bathmat to avoid slipping

How to Play:

• Play this game at night. Fill the bathtub with water, submerge yourself, and turn off the lights. You should be facing the tap.
• While in the tub, wash your hair while repeating, “Daruma-san fell down,” over and over again.
• You will experience a vision. Just relax and watch it unfold. A black-haired woman in a white nightgown will be standing in a bathtub, for reasons not known to you or anyone. She will fall and land face first onto the tap. It punctures her eye and ultimately kills her.
• Ask her aloud, “Why did you fall in the tub?” It is not clear whether or not she slipped or was pushed.
• Once the vision has concluded, you will have summoned her spirit. Keep your eyes closed. Climb out of the tub slowly and carefully. Exit the bathroom and close the door behind you. Then, and only then, it is safe to open your eyes.
• Crawl into bed and go to sleep. The game will begin the next morning when you wake up.
• You will see her over your shoulder when you look in a mirror, or in your peripheral vision as you go throughout your day. Her clothing is tattered, her black hair is tangled, and her skin is rotting after too much time in the tub. She will only have one eye. But she will stare at you relentlessly.
• As the day goes on she will get closer and closer to you. Feel free to yell, “Tomare!” Which means, “Stop!” And then quickly run away. This will, in theory, allow you to have some space from her.

 

Important Information:

• No matter what, do not allow her to catch you. Ever.
• To end the game, throw your glance over your right shoulder and look at her (you may not want to, but you must). Shout, “Kitta!”, which means, “I cut you loose.” Swing your arm down in a chopping motion. If you have done this correctly, the game will be over.
• If you have NOT done this correctly, well……run and hide.

The Hide-And-Seek Game

Dolls can invoke a feeling of dread for a lot of people.  If you choose to perform a ritual in which the doll is temporarily inhabited by a spirit that plays a potentially deadly game of hide-and-seek with you, well, you will certainly never look at a doll the same way again.  This game originated in Japan, and has enjoyed quite a bit of popularity over there.  In 2008, the instructions were translated into English and began spreading to other parts of the world.  Find a doll, look into its glassy eyes, and ask it to play a game.  After all, what’s the worst that can happen?

Minimum Number of Players: One

Materials:

• One stuffed doll with limbs
• Rice, enough to stuff the doll full
• One needle
• One crimson thread
• One pair of nail clippers
• One knife
• One cup of salt water
• A bathtub filled with water
• A hiding place purified by incense and ofuda. There must be a TV in there.

 

How to Play:

• Cut the doll open, remove its stuffing, and re-stuff it with rice. This will attract spirits.
• Using the nail clippers, cut a few of your nails and put the clippings inside of the doll with the rice. This will bind you to the doll.
• Sew up the opening with the crimson thread. When you finish sewing, instead of cutting the thread, take the remainder and tie it around the doll.
• Fill your bathtub with water.
• Go to your hiding place and put the cup of saltwater in it.
• Give a name to your doll. The name can be any but your own.
• At 3:00 a.m., say, “[Your Name] is the first it,” to the doll three times.
• Go to the bathroom and put the doll into the water-filled tub.
• Turn off all of the lights in your house, go back to the hiding place, and switch on the TV. This will act as a safeguard against any unwanted spirits that may enter your home during the game.
• After counting to ten with your eyes closed, return to the bathroom with the knife in your hand. The doll will still be floating in the bathtub.
• Say to the doll, “I have found you, [Doll’s Name].” Stab the doll with the knife and cut the crimson thread binding it.
• Say, “You are the next it, [Doll’s Name].” Return the doll to the bathtub.
• Run back to the hiding place and hide. The doll will come looking for you.
• Pour half of the cup of salt water into your mouth. Do not swallow it.
• Emerge from you hiding place and start looking for the doll. Note: The doll will not necessarily be where you left it. Keep the salt water in your mouth.
• When you find the doll, pour the salt water in the cup over it. Then, spit out the salt water onto it.
• Say, “I win!” three times. This will end the game. Allow the doll to dry, burn it, and discard its remains.

Important Information:

• Do not leave your hiding place without the saltwater.
• Do not stop the game until you have played it to completion.
