How Trauma lives in the body and what to do about it

Let’s delve into the intricacies of trauma and truly understand the essence of this term. Often tossed around casually, it’s crucial to recognize that trauma isn’t just a word; it’s a palpable, physical experience etched into the fabric of our bodies.

Grasping the Essence of Trauma

From my perspective and based on my personal experience, trauma essentially manifests as tension within the body. It’s not a singular event but a recurring, unconscious buildup of tension that, when unaddressed, gives rise to chronic unconscious behavior. These behavioral patterns reveal themselves in relational dynamics, persistent fatigue, pain, and even illness.

Consider this: tension is the holding of breath, the tightening of muscles. Picture creating tension in your body right now. How does it feel? Safe or unsafe? This simple exercise highlights the profound impact of tension on our perception and experience.

Unveiling the Internal Armor

As tension becomes chronic, it transforms into a form of armor within the body. This armor creates blocks, hindering the free flow of energy. Through these blocks, we cut off energy flow, leading to leaks of energy. Tension, armor, blocks, and energy leaks – these are all signals that it may feel too dangerous to feel.

A Personal Reflection

Allow me to share a personal reflection. I recently visited my childhood home, where I love to sift through old memorabilia. I stumbled upon a shoebox filled with old notes exchanged classmates under the school desks. The immediate reaction was, “I’m not ready to feel that right now.” This resistance to feeling certain emotions is a common response, leading us to create tension as a defense mechanism.

The Essence of Energy Consciousness

For me, energy consciousness, presence, and feeling are interconnected aspects of the same experience of being alive. Embracing our full potential for creation and manifestation, saying yes to life, unlocks a free flow of energy. This state of being conscious and present, unfortunately not always accessible, has the power to save lives.

Yet, more often than not, we resist feeling and being fully present. Tension becomes a coping mechanism, a shield from confronting difficult emotions. Tense your body for a moment to see how it affects your ability to feel. Are you breathing? Making sounds? Moving? Most likely not because breath, sounds, and movement are all ways in which energy moves. All life moves energy through breath, sound, and movement. Tension blocks this life flow.

Liberating Energy through Breath, Sound, and Movement

Moving our energy through breath, sound, and movement is the key to breaking free from the chains of tension. Unlike animals that instinctively shake off tension after a stressful event, us humans tend to hold onto it. When we consciously move energy, we not only experience pleasure but also unlock long-held stuck energy, including the challenging emotions from early childhood.

The Invitation to Release

In essence, we use tension as a shield to avoid feeling. To break this cycle, I invite you  to experiment with moving energy through breath, sound, and movement. This practice opens up the energy flow, allowing us to access pleasure, creativity, and power.

A Guided Breathing Exercise

I invite you to join me for a little exercise. Breathe deeply and notice where tension resides in your body. Breathe into that tension, gradually releasing it. Focus on areas like the pelvic region, often a repository for accumulated tension. Feel the contact your feet make with the ground, and with each exhale, release the held tension with a vocal sigh.

Concluding Thoughts

Embarking on this journey of self-discovery invites you to embrace the beauty and pleasure in every aspect of life. Even when faced with challenging emotions, acknowledging and feeling them can be transformative. If you have any questions or thoughts, feel free to connect with me. Wishing you all the best on this beautiful journey.
