I saw sacred geometry on the soccer field last weekend and the patterns within the chakras – the seven energy centers that extend from the pelvic floor to the crown of the head in our central channel – came full circle to me. The matrix of the pitch my 14-year-old son played on outside of Boise, ID, lit up with triangular wall passes and arcing penalty kicks. The night before the finals, we went to see the blockbuster movie The Avengers. While the end was maudlin (spoiler alert: I still can’t believe Marvel disintegrated the Black Panther), the chakras revealed themselves again in the form of six infinity stones with hidden geometric shapes inside them and I thought to myself, is Hollywood waking up or am I?

As a yogi who has been learning about the chakras and sacred geometry – universal patterns used in art and architecture that are made up of mathematical ratios and given symbolic and sacred meaning – I admit that I am in the infancy of my awakening. But I was floored to realize that the ancient lessons I’ve been learning on my yoga mat are also available in everyday life and to our children. They are in the food we eat and in nature. Sacred geometry is ubiquitous and the transformative power of the chakras is in the air we breathe all the time.

It was like the day I got a white Subaru and realized how many other white Subarus there are on the road. We see what we want to see, and we perceive the world in our own unique way. But sacred geometry and the chakras, while sometimes confusing, teach us that we share common ground because we are all moving around in familiar patterns. If we access our core on a regular basis, we can empower ourselves.

A few months ago I did a course on the Enneagram – a nine-pointed sacred geometric star created by the Sikhs to unveil nine personality types, understand our patterns and have compassion for ourselves and others. I learned about my shadow side and was able to see how I get stuck in the same pattern of victimhood when I face challenges in my life. This was disconcerting and comforting at the same time. Now that I recognize these patterns more clearly, I see that I can fight the flow or go with it. I choose to take comfort in the fact that when I am in the flow, I am in charge of my destiny and nothing can hold me back. When I fight it, I feel stuck. The quicker I recognize that I am going down that well-worn path, the quicker I can pivot and feel the freedom that comes from knowing that I can choose a different path.

I try not to get stuck on dichotomies. Because as Newton’s third law states, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Whether it’s a circle, a triangle or a flower, six infinity stones, seven chakras or nine personality types, it doesn’t really matter. The way I see it, all of this ancient symbolism is interrelated and meant to teach us that wherever we are, we can always ground ourselves and reclaim our power to find the winning formula within.

Back on the sidelines in Boise, the championship game got physical. I took three deep breaths and imagined our team scoring a goal. The opposing goalie blocked the kick. But the ball slipped between his legs and our striker ran back, and kicked it into the net for the win. It wasn’t the most glorious goal, and I do not take any credit for it even though I willed it so, but I was proud that our boys found a way to harness their human potential.

A Basic Guide to Sacred Geometry in the Chakras
1st Chakra – Rooted at the base of the spine, this is the seat of trust and oneness represented by the circular shape of earth, it reflects our tribal nature. The symbol is a four petaled lotus flower.

2nd Chakra – The lower abdomen rules our power, our confidence, sexuality and base fears. It is represented by a lens, or two intersecting circles and the symbol is a six petaled lotus flower with a crescent moon in the center.

3rd Chakra – The solar plexus is where we find self-esteem and courage. It is represented by the seed of life, a series of flowers within circles. The symbol is a 10 petaled lotus flower with a triangle pointed downward.

4th Chakra – The heart is where you find harmony and self-love. It is represented by the flower of life, a mandala of concentric circles with flowers inside them. The symbol is a six-pointed star with a twelve petaled lotus flower.

5th Chakra – The throat chakra guides our communication and judgement. It is represented by the fruit of life, a series of circles within the flower of life. The symbol is a circle within a downward triangle surrounded by a 16 petaled flower.

6th Chakra – The third eye between the eyebrows is where our intuition resides. It is represented by Metatron’s cube, a series of triangles. The symbol is also a circle within a downward triangle but the two petals alongside are like wings.

7th Chakra – The crown of the head is the place of faith often represented by a star to connect us to the infinite. The symbol has thousands of petals and a central circle.
