Who’s donated more shoes: Crocs or Toms?

Toms Shoes is known and loved for its generous one-for-one business model—buy one, they give one to a child in need. They’re hip: the “Prius” (you know, I care) of shoes.

Crocs is, these days, made fun of for ugly duckling shoes. But its shoes are tough, waterproof, bacteria-fighting, vegan. One thing it’s not known for? Any kind of altruistic business model, at all.

So who wins?

Not even close.

Just the other day, Crocs announced it was donating 100,000 pairs to the Japanese tsunami / earthquake survivors. In total, it’s given approx 2.6, now, million pairs of shoes to those in need.

Toms has given over a million pairs—a wonderful achievement, too.

Still, this is a case of perception versus reality that deserves a tip of the hat click of the heels. Hopefully the two companies will rival one another in generosity for years to come, and more shoe companies will get in the make-the-world-a-better-place action.

Hats Shoes off to both companies.
