Can Fear Be Good for Your Yoga Practice? Part 1.

by on Nov 30, 2011

Your hand now on the same latitude as your heart, surrendering to that grace-filled moment you can awaken into fearlessness or at least consider the idea of it. Given such portals into ecstatic release and blissful emptying what purpose could fear possibly serve in Yoga practice, other than being something we'd like to stamp paid?

Can Physical Practice Get you to a Spiritual Place?

by on Nov 30, 2011

In hatha yoga the body and the breath are the means by which we create balance throughout the entire field of being. Sustained asana practice (and controlled breathing) works on every facet of our selves from the gross physical to the energetic, to the machinations of the mind, our habitual reactions, our inner dialogue, our ability to tolerate discomfort. Doesn't working on your habitual ways of thinking and reacting, many of which adversely affect others (for example, your tendency to bail when the going gets tough) constitute spiritual work?

by on Nov 30, 2011

Our minds want to judge our experience and ourselves. Becoming curious about what happens if I just allow my truth is the first step. We often find resistance at first -- and that's ok. Just start there and feel the resistance. Life will give us plenty of opportunities to practice every day.

Why abundance is too much: in praise of enough

by on Nov 30, 2011

The dictionary tells me that abundance is, "an extremely plentiful or oversufficient quantity or supply". In these difficult financial times, is it realistic to expect abundance? Do we really need an 'oversufficient quantity'?

by on Nov 30, 2011

Sweating out the toxins from your body is hard, sweating out the toxins from your mind is even harder. Just like a tight, stiff spine, the ego is completely inflexible, but every time you try another back bend, your spine opens up a little...and slowly you begin to find some progress.

Fall Down Seven Times, Get Up Eight. ~ Loretta Pyles

by on Nov 29, 2011

When the physical space of OWS was dismantled, the movement had been functioning for 59 days. Let's compare 59 days of the occupation to 59 days of spiritual practice. You get up every day for 59 days and practice yoga and/or meditate. When you do that, you build momentum and something shifts. You start to change energetically; you are creating new samskaras. A new you begins to take form. Nobody knows exactly how it works, but as my teacher says, "a little mystery is nice."

What does mercury in retrograde actually mean?

by on Nov 29, 2011

Yesterday I was working on an invitation for a small get together and after a hour of formatting pictures, colors, and fonts it disappeared. My hard work gone. I threw up my hands, stepped away from the computer and after a big sigh moved on with the day. I knew why this was happening. Mercury comes around again!

Blessed Are the Flexible, For They Shall Not Be Bent Out Of Shape. ~ Maureen Chura

Mindfulness & Jon Kabat-Zinn.

by on Nov 29, 2011

There are many different ways to practice mindfulness, but generally, the fundamental idea (regardless of which way you practice) is to focus your attention in one direction. This can be done through focused breathing techniques, repeating a mantra, or observing a certain emotion or body sensation. Instead of letting the mind wander in a million different directions, the objective is to calm the mind enough to be able to fully experience the present moment.

Soul Crush: Why Abdi Farah Was & Is the Next Great Artist. ~ Kathryn Lou

by on Nov 28, 2011

Despite the depth of Abdi Farah's work, he still seems light-hearted and, generally, happy about life. Abdi reminds me of one of the guys I could have seen walking around my dorm with a sketchbook under his arm, eating cheese fries at 3am while watching “Chappelle’s Show” on his Mac. Throughout the competition, Abdi resisted common artistic stereotypes – he wasn’t narcissistic, tortured or indulgent.

The Camel-haired Belt ~ Zali Nash

by on Nov 28, 2011

Long lines stream down the river bank where the masses are herded into small flocks and are allowed to walk in ten metre bursts before stopping for about 5 minutes at a time. On the pilgrimage to the hairy icon, you can purchase a snack, a cup of tea or go to the loo. It is a highly orchestrated, beautifully organised event.
