Your hand now on the same latitude as your heart, surrendering to that grace-filled moment you can awaken into fearlessness or at least consider the idea of it. Given such portals into ecstatic release and blissful emptying what purpose could fear possibly serve in Yoga practice, other than being something we’d like to stamp paid?

In hatha yoga the body and the breath are the means by which we create balance throughout the entire field of being. Our minds want to judge our experience and ourselves. Becoming curious about what happens if I just allow my truth is the first step. We often find resistance at first — and that’s ok. Just start there and feel the resistance. Life will give us plenty of opportunities to practice every day.

When the physical space of OWS was dismantled, the movement had been functioning for 59 days. Let’s compare 59 days of the occupation to 59 days of spiritual practice. You get up every day for 59 days and practice yoga and/or meditate. When you do that, you build momentum and something shifts. You start to change energetically; you are creating new samskaras. A new you begins to take form. Nobody knows exactly how it works, but as my teacher says, “a little mystery is nice.”

There are many different ways to practice mindfulness, but generally, the fundamental idea (regardless of which way you practice) is to focus your attention in one direction. This can be done through focused breathing techniques, repeating a mantra, or observing a certain emotion or body sensation. Instead of letting the mind wander in a million different directions, the objective is to calm the mind enough to be able to fully experience the present moment.

Abdi reminds me of one of the guys I could have seen walking around my dorm with a sketchbook under his arm, eating cheese fries at 3am while watching “Chappelle’s Show” on his Mac. Throughout the competition, Abdi resisted common artistic stereotypes – he wasn’t narcissistic, tortured or indulgent.

On the pilgrimage to the hairy icon, you can purchase a snack, a cup of tea or go to the loo. It is a highly orchestrated, beautifully organised event.
