11 Ways to Wake Up.

Some days feel like déjà vu all over again.

Six a.m. my alarm clock goes off. I hit snooze. Twice. Then at 6:18 I get up, meditate. Make coffee. Wake the kids. Help them dress. Feed them. Dance around a little. Get them to school. Then it’s yoga/shower/dress followed by work/edit/write/massage client/twitbooking/skyping/etc. until lunch-ish. And the rest of it varies but those first few hours can be a little “Groundhog Day” at times.

And it’s okay. It’s okay, as long as I remember that it isn’t all the same. Each day we’re reborn and have 86,400 seconds to make things a little different and a little bit better than the day before.

Want today to be a little different? Choose your own adventure:

1. If you usually drive, bike to work instead.

2. Go vegan. Even if it’s just for the day.

3. Adopt a pet.

4. Dance in public.

5. Write something for elephant journal!

6. Hug a stranger.

7. Write a letter to your congressman.

8. Wear red underwear.

9. Help conserve water. Shower with a friend.

10. Put your phone away for a few hours.

But these are all still pretty superficial. If getting off the hamster wheel really matters to you:

11. Open up. Open your eyes, your ears, your mind and your heart.

“When you open yourself to the continually changing, impermanent, dynamic nature of your own being and of reality, you increase your capacity to love and care about other people and your capacity to not be afraid. You’re able to keep your eyes open, your heart open, and your mind open. And you notice when you get caught up in prejudice, bias, and aggression. You develop an enthusiasm for no longer watering those negative seeds, from now until the day you die. And, you begin to think of your life as offering endless opportunities to start to do things differently.”
