This video raises some tough questions about the Future of Yoga. {Adult only}

Bonus: for a beautiful, rather non-sexual photo series: Nude Yoga. {Photos of Model, shot by Husband}

Adult: Sara Jean Underwood Playboy’s Yoga Full Video

Bonus: want to see something better? Best yoga video you’ve seen for a long time.

Bonus: (Tasteful) Nude Yoga.

Bonus: Naked Yoga: Now that’s Hot Yoga (Try this [only] at Home).

Bonus: Tantric Sex (and the City).

I was among several who broke the news on the existence of “Playboy Yoga” a few years back—I swear, I just read elephant for the yoga.

And I’m personally of the opinion that this is fine if it gets folks beyond lust—the videos aren’t that sexy—and back to thinking about yoga. Likely, this video will attract folks who normally don’t belong to the “yoga demographic”—and I’m good with that. But there are serious concerns, too—touched on in my original blog, “Now we’ve seen everything.*”

But we’ve never shared the nude version. Until now.

A few years after the controversy’s died down, I think we’re ready. Or, not. Either way, here ’tis. It’s just a naked body—and, yet, it’s

…the ultimate challenge to those “Yobo” fans who say that Yoga for Weight Loss, Disco Yoga, Bikram, Adidas Yoga with (my friend) Rainbeau Mars and Yoga without all that annoying Granola, Chanting or Sanskrit may not be “traditional yoga” (a moving target in and of itself)…but nevertheless may help open the door to those who might not ordinarily be interested in pure yoga, true yoga, quality yoga.

…Yup, there’s a new url in town:

http://www.playboy.com/yoga

Just the url itself is enough to provoke convulsions, grimaces, grins, vomiting and/or ogling. Beauty—or otherwise—is in the eye of the beholder.

This is provocative stuff—it raises some tough questions about the Future of Yoga (addressed by elephant, yogadork, itsallyogababy, joellhahn and, in comments, by our readers in the links above).

In any case, as the Buddhists say, it’s our obstacles or enemies that are our best friends, provoking self-examination, questioning and growing pains.

  1. Edward Staskus says:

Like we say in our brave new world, hooray, it's "all yoga!"

  2. tea says:

she seems to be enjoying the flow, fact that she practices asanas is great for her health, total well being and how she chooses to do is entirely up to her and if someone will pick up yoga because they saw this clip even better

  3. Melanie says:

she's a beautiful expression of a human being. I don't find the video erotic or pervy at all. Just very natural. If I had plastic unmoving breasts I'd practice naked more often myself too.

  4. Comments, debate, discussion from my page: facebook.com/waylonhlewis and our main page on Facebook:

What is with all the naked yoga stuff lately?? And if we’re going to be very Yogi about it…where are the men doing naked yoga? Yeah…we don’t want to see that either ;)

Sandra N is it really yoga if the intent is to titillate?

    Lori W
Seriously though…what is with all the naked yoga stuff on elephant lately???

Sandra N naked sadhus shed their clothing to let go of mundane life, not to get “chicks”.

Waylon Lewis Lori, out of 300 recent articles, I’d love for you to fine two “naked yoga” articles. Challenge accepted? Often, seriously, it’s just what folks tend to see and notice and remember.

Waylon Lewis Sandra, amen, read my commentary!

Waylon Lewis Top image I’d like to note on pinterest, a largely female-read site: http://pinterest.com/pin/83316661828066018/

    Channing Tatum…YOWZA!!

Sandra N as long as I don’t have to watch the video!

Waylon Lewis Sandra, that’s what I find really interesting…that question. I talk about it…would love to see your comment. And the video’s frankly not that titillating, kinda boring, not great (not horrible, either) yoga…it’s more the issues raised that’s fascinating.

Sandra N well, I did watch part of it – it IS boring, she’s often out of alignment, she doesn’t seem to understand what she’s doing. at least she looks good doing it but I wouldn’t call it yoga. especially with the camera’s focus on her tits, her shaved crotch, etc. Playboy is merely jumping on the yoga bandwagon, the men who ogle this video will probably not practice or take a “real” class…

Sandra N I do remember seeing about a year ago that a filmmaker was cutting footage of “naked yoga” using real Ashtangi women and he filmed them actually doing their practice (which was quite impressive). no voice-over (at the time) and I think he intended for the final product to be shown at film festivals. don’t remember his name.

Sandra N and I don’t think they shaved their crotches!

Waylon Lewis I don’t think it’s frankly very ogle-able…I didn’t think the yoga was horrible, but the instruction was too limited, the alignment as you said off sometimes…it’s…weird. A weird mishmash of sexy and yoga that isn’t much of either.

Waylon Lewis Lori, if you blog for us, then walk your talk! Send us some scales-balancing posts! I’m not much for blogging naked men, though I’ve done it!

    Julie Y Wow, interesting.

Laura Kay hating on this is sooo, well 2007. stop judging and move on.

Darren Boman What, no Lu Lu Lemon….! :-)

Stephanie L nudity takes away from the message.

Janis Wilson Yoga while nude is grounding, peaceful, liberating, connective, and more. The more it’s seen and talked about the less shock, awe, and drool there is.

Melanie Green why is this rated “Adults Only” ? It’s not pornographic or even erotic. It’s very natural ( apart from the breasts!)

Melissa Richard oh come off it. Yoga is just as grounding with clothes on. This is complete BS. Yoga it the opposite of needing attention. Everything has to be about sexuality today. Gross.

Alicia C Love this. Only heat is self generated!

elephantjournal.com Melissa Richard, Melanie Green, not sure if you’re commenting to me? No one’s hating anything. I love the conversation. I’m not condemning her or this video. I don’t think, as Melanie says, it’s that erotic. As a responsible blogger/sharer I do need to label this “adult” or age-restricted. Janis Wilson, amen! Laura Kay…totally, dude, soooo 2007!

    • Arthur&Martha says:

yoga's all about what's going on inside right? so why is it an afront to see a naked form practising? Although I would like to see an older more practised form. Maybe its not the nakedness or the beauty but the ownership trying to cash in on ancient wisdom to make a fast buck that rankles (someone did mention LuluLemon in another post – however I do wear their pants as I write this), but this wisdom does belong to everyone so why shouldn't we practise how we like?

  5. onlyonelikethis says:

    Sara Underwood is absolutely beautiful!

    • Yoga Bitch says:

Of course she is…she is the work of art of a team of very talented plastic surgeons who should be getting full credit for her appearance. She's basically a human mannequin. It's so disturbing that THIS is what we find beautiful in our culture!

(She's had a nose job, lip augmentation, cheek augmentation, and breast implants, just fyi…and those are just the procedures that she's admitted to publicly).

      • Superman says:

I think this video was before she got the boob job. This video was back in her amateur playboy days. Since then, she's gotten bigger, rounder implanted boobs.

  6. Jeff Roth says:

Clearly, that doesn’t take balls at all.

  7. Padma Kadag says:

What is the significance of the shaved pussy? Is it some kind of samaya commitment?

    • i had same question… am not familiar w the term 'samaya' if anything instead of a tan also…powdered up like a female sadhu with all hair dreadlocked including the nethe-regions. i don't know what is all the obsession about the zooming in on the breasts. in europe ppl go to the beach topless. and in some cultures the nakedness is common, such as the japanese onsen. of course genders are separated. it would have been nice to see a man video too just to not objectify neither sex, as in "ok we saw both and their naughty bits..even steven" but oh well. just saying for the straight women out there. i don't care bc i like women and i am a woman.

  8. Remy C. says:

Fascinating, had no clue… For years Sara's been hosting The Feed segment on G4's Attack of the Show , where Olivia Munn honed her chops. Sadly AOTS is being cancelled. Esquire or GQ, not sure, is taking over the network and changing the format.

  9. TaraBlu says:

It just made me want to do my practice. I felt nothing sexual from this video. Ironically I was kind of hoping to though!

  10. Lizlojo says:

Beautiful soul moving her body. No judging.

  11. kris says:

I don't know why anyone would take issue with this. She's just doing her thing. Personally, I would love to practice yoga naked and think I might do so when I get home, I'm kind of inspired! I also find that watching her doing the poses without clothing makes it easier for me to understand how to get into them myself.

    • Yoga Bitch says:

Kris, I'll tell you why I take issue with it — it's because this imagery of a completely FAKE looking woman (she's had a nose job, boob job, lip job and cheek augmentation, all admitted to publicly) is used to further promote this unrealistic ideal of beauty that exists in our culture, and NOW they're using yoga as a platform for doing so. I find it disgusting as a woman. And it's not because I feel discriminated against because I'm unattractive and think it's unfair. In fact, I can admit that my own looks have given me somewhat of an advantage in life. But, I hate that we even live in a world where that is the case! And I don't have a problem with plastic surgery, necessarily. What I do have a problem with though, is the subtle oppression and domination of women through media and culture, sending the message that our very purpose in life is to please men. This video is gross, and the underlying intention behind it has absolutely NOTHING to do with yoga. And her voice it utterly annoying to top it all off. :)

    • ash says:

Her alignment is pretty off in many of these poses, it was really the only thing I could watch so I would be careful using it as a guide for correct postures. But get on with your sensuality girl! Channel that Shakti!

    • Rene says:

Thanks Kris, i totally agree with you. I find that a naked instructor helps a lot when it comes to properly understanding many poses as well as moving from one pose to the next. I wish there were naked yoga classes locally in my city.

  12. [...] founder, Waylon Lewis’ recent “Playboy Yoga” article is typical of some of the weed-through-ables on EJ. A rehash of something published earlier [...]

  13. Auki says:

    Lots of naive comments above…

Most guys, when they watch this video, are probably staring at her gorgeous breasts and wondering what it would be like to have sex with such a beautiful young girl. I know I was. I think I'll get back now to a real Yoga-spiritual practice that actually works. I'm going to go chant the Divine Names!

  14. Yogifeminist says:

OBJECTIFICATION OF WOMEN AS YOGA ENTHUSIASISTS – this is obviously ALL the video is about. How many times do we women get a creep look when we mention that we are yoga lovers to any men? I do not do yoga to satisfy men. Honestly, I don't do anything to satisfy men, although our culture is constantly telling me that the whole point of my existence is to make men feel satisfied. This is horrid and I am appalled. Yoga in our society has become one more thing that women do that is trivilalized and sexualized, making it even more difficult for us to forge our own identities and practices outside of the insane beauty ideals ever present in our world. LEAVE US AND OUR YOGA ALONE!

    • Yoga Bitch says:

      Amen.

    • Kristo says:

The second you say to a guy that you do yoga, he will think of you better and more likely be attracted to you. And you find this bad? Are you a lesbian or a forever alone type? Human nature. What are you gonna say next? Sex should only take place for reproduction purposes? It's not about being pervy, it's just a turn on. Just like telling a girl you are rich will get her wet.

    • YZOsorio says:

The reactions to your reaction are interesting. You voicing your concerns that this is taking something beautiful and pure (yoga) and perverting are true — I think ultimately in an evolved world (some European countries:) this form of yoga can take place without the teenage mind set of everyone getting a hard-on. But this video and the way is produced I don't think can provide anyone from actually getting benefit from the yoga: it's a joke. I do think you are wrong in the yoga has become one more thing the is trivialized. Yoga is much stronger then this little video. To me it's novelty, not power, and those that seek this type of novelty are living in a much lower form then many others are (thankfully)…

    • don't worry yogifeminist…. the true essence of yoga will forever remain along with all of Patanjali's Sutras and it's awesome miracles. the few loser men who feel the need to ogle over breasts are likely sexually deprived, fat and ugly and definitely will not deter the true essence of yoga. while i find the shape of the woman lovely (as a" feminist celibate lesbian" though labels are for t-shirts…just saying i am not a man) i don't particularly like forced tans, fake tans, fake hair color nor shaved pubes…not saying i like hairy, but if she were more natural in accepting her appearance and the video included a separate yoga sequence w a guy in it then maybe it would be more egalitarian and less sexist. we definitely have a problem in our culture of 2 things: women being objectified compared to men and some old ugly sick men who thankfully are with time making a smaller minority and perhaps the occassional inmature A hole man of any age who was raised without proper values. it's the era of aquarius and the feminine energy is coming back, balancing out the patriarchal overly out of control war monger dysfunction that exists…in each of us male or female we carry elements or characteristics of both genders. and the male gender has been out of control needing recalibrating since 5000 years at least.

    • Johnno says:

Yogifeminist, speaking for culture, your "existence is to make men feel satisfied" is a total bunch of B.S. This seems to be the comment of someone who has an OVER INFLATED sense of SELF! You are not that important. Get over yourself. Your other comment about "I don't do anything to satisfy men" only makes you seem like a man hating, bitter, and lonely person. Your comments and thoughts do not seem to be the kind of things that would come from ANY kind of yogi.

  15. Tempted. Curious. But then, I think, “curiosity killed the cat”. Pass. Until or unless curiosity starts bossing me around.

  16. bree says:

um..why is she explaining the whole thing in first person?? it is just weird.
I recommend hitting the mute button for this one…

  17. nunh says:

She is pretty. I never liked the tan look – rather pretty natural coloring. I love the naked form – male and female. I don't see just the sexual – I see anatomy and beauty. I think it is all rather harmless and her poses aren't that bad. Lighten up.

  18. syrai says:

Sara is a Godess and yoga is for everyone! Please people. Xoxo

  19. Robert Ebersold says:

Has everyone above forgotten that she is a paid actress and model working for an adult entertainment company? She obviously does some form of yoga for fitness, or she wouldnt be able to do the poses so easily, but she is no yogi guru. This is the nude version of the same video she does clothed. Its marketing, thats all. It really isnt very sexy – the cameraman needed to focus on her breasts to remind you you are watching a Playboy video. As for me, I like doing yoga nude (and I am male). I do it clothed too, but without them just makes focusing on my body easier.

  20. Jane says:

Maybe I am watching and listening too closely, but does she have left and right mixed up? During the Warrior poses she clearly is working her right side, but states my left arm, left leg, etc…

    • elephantjournal says:

The video may be flipped? Honestly, after a few minutes, it's hard to watch…kinda boring, as many folks have mentioned. No bid deal.

  21. marieblazek says:

She is a lovely physical specimen, but the shaved pubes and here little girl voice spell p-e-d-o-p-h-i-l-e. Simple truth. Very little yoga going on here.

  22. Lincster says:

Has anyone noticed that she seems to have everything backwards? Whenever she says “left arm,” “right arm,” etc..she actually uses the opposite appendage? is the video shot in a mirror, or does she truly not know her right from her left?

  23. [...] Bonus: On the other hand, Playboy Yoga. (Now We’ve Seen Everything) [...]

  24. Heather says:

I have to agree with some people that this is not a good way to promote yoga. Especially after reading how much work this woman has had done. After I watched this film I have been contemplating getting breast implants, to the point of endless hours of research for the perfect surgeon. It is sad that this is promoted by a reputable yoga source. To me yoga is about being comfortable with your body, along with other things, and loving yourself for what you are. I do find this video distasteful because of what it promotes. I am disappointed in how I let myself feel about my body after watching this video and then how far I have taken this augmentation process. I understand that maybe elephant journal wanted to show yogis what is out there and keep us informed. I suppose it is our job to view this type of material and stay comfortable within our own bodies.

    • Elz says:

Heather I think you make an important point. I also watched the video for a couple of minutes before I rushed to the comment section, which is what I am really interested in. My immediate question was, "How does this video affect the yoga community?" Until I read your comment, I forgot the question, "How does this video affect me?" I am one who attempts to live in awareness. When I saw this video, I was kind of spacing out. However, I noticed my thoughts were almost entirely judgement based. I even clicked on the article thinking "What will this incite?" I went on to judge her thinness, her boobs, her stomach, her butt, her tan butt. I was eyeing her yoga practice, thinking that she could benefit from a teacher reminding her to root the outside edge of her back foot in warrior II and to keep her knee over her ankle to protect her joint. Then I noticed comparisons rising in my mind….my stomach does not look like that… I am not that thin… Then, feelings… I feel sad that I am not that thin. I hate to admit that there is still life in the self concept that thin is tied to worth for me. I believe that the thin = worth paradigm does come from, and is fed by, the people who create and consume the type of message that this video offers. I include myself in this group of people. I feel sad that this is a playboy worthy situation. I feel sad that I still tie self worth to thinness. I want to do my part to change this paradigm. The reason I read elephant journal is because EJ tends to bring us into a conversation about what enlightened society looks like. So, what I come away with is a recommitment to become aware of when and where I allow myself to be ignorant of my own thoughts and feelings. I come away with a recommitment to strengthening the consumption of what I find to be yoga, sex, and beauty through my own experience, and not a cultural lens.

  25. anna says:

I felt quite sorry watching this, the music was trying not to sound like cheap porn the moves and camera angles trying to be tasteful but on the cobra showing a close up of her breasts.I found the nudity neutral the make up and lip gloss gave the whole think that fake vibe.It was all a bit creepy and nothing about the inner journey, I did feel her voice had a really odd vibe to it, as if she is so used to selling herself she doesnt even realize what she is doing, but trying to do something for her spiritual nurturing, very typical of the times we live in where fake glossy narcissism can be called spiritual practise, ive been living in India for 3 years now m from UK and the amount of people ive met who claim to be enlightened and are deeply corrupt is becoming a joke!

  26. Carolyn says:

What is the purpose of being naked? She did nothing that can't be done with clothes on.

    • elephantjournal says:

What is the purpose of being clothed? We do nothing that can't be done while wearing our birthday suit.

  27. Lorpa says:

The female form is awesome and has been worshipped since Eve and the Virgin Mary. Sara appears as the goddess, a moving Boccaccio portrait in naked splendor, a stark contrast to the seductive poses of Lady Gaga. Both have their place. Sara shows us the power of Sachidanada, and Beauty, Truth, and Goodness. Gaga represents the biological imperative. As a man, this is what keeps me inspired.

    • sat chit ananda ? existence consciousness bliss… hmmm… maybe the grecian archetypal body for me, but the tan, electrocuted hair, shaved pubes… hmmm nope that does nothing for me. i can appreciate beauty, but that does not connect me no more or no less to the spiritual if it's a human body bc it is a lustful experience which to me has no part in the yoga i have learned. alhough i can understand the peak of bliss of orgasm as associated with nirvana. I just don't think Patanjali delved into transformation and connection to purusha via copulation if that makes sense. i am not versed with much tantra so that is my small perception

This is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. The music is gross as is the concept. As “light” and unpretentious as this blog is, I’m still disgusted and disturbed by this posting. I feel sorry for this woman who obviously doesn’t know the word ‘exploitation’. Get a fu#€ing life. Only in America would something so mundane bland and superficial get wrapped up in the ‘yoga’ craze and with a pretty blond young stupid girl to top it all off. Elephant I didn’t think its possible but you’ve stooped to a new low. Offensive in its UNcreativity!!!!!

Her lack of knowledge or ability to do the poses correctly

What I saw is someone putting out there incorrectly done poses

That if done over a long period will cause injuries.

If she doesn’t have low back pain already she will in the future. Maybe even knee problems. Oh also neck issues Shoulder stand w o

Support can do that. In ur own privacy do what u want but

But publicly displaying postures like this will create more bad press

    For classical yoga.

  34. Aella says:

She looks nice, obviously the camera guy wasn't gearing this towards a serious yoga video, but we all can see that. My big concerns are that her foot looked like it was a bit too far in on the warrior poses and so many with the knee bent in a row? Maybe I'm just weak but that didn't look fun, my knees wouldn't be able to do that, and so many back bends without recovering forward bends? I adore back bends, but after camel I definitely need to recover.

  35. yogaguerilla says:

whatever. this is not yoga. very pretty. whatever

  36. Allison says:

This is just dumb. I can't really think of any other way of explaining it. Anyone who practices true yoga, I'm sure understands that this has nothing to do with yoga. It's just playboy.

  37. heh… a lot of pessimists in here. i enjoyed the video even before it was done if you know what I mean-

But on a serious note, a quarter of these stretches are used in the insanity workout, and i have to say its feels good before stomping out 25 minutes of cardio! I can see how people could be put off by cheesiness of the music, the narration, and the angles, but It didn't deter me from seeing stretches that I can use in my routines.

  38. Michael T says:

personally, as a yoga teacher, I found myself paying very little attention to her nudity. heck, I do asana generally in the buff. what I kept wanting to do was give her adjustments…more mobility in the sacrum for the forward bends, general repositioning during the warrior sequence, and so on. I found myself also wanting to bring some order to the sequence of poses as well. she's beautiful, and it would be great if this brings even one person to yoga.

to all the people who are finding fault…perhaps direct that impulse inwards and you may discover why this makes you feel uncomfortable. perversion of yoga? how can the practice, being ultimately neutral, be perverted? sexualization? if something does not sexually stimulate me, I have to assume that it is sexually neutral, in which case, perhaps it is you, the viewer that is bringing sexualization into it via your way of looking.

    • elephantjournal says:

Agree. The comments read like the display of mind in meditation, when confronted with something taboo, boring, off-putting or confusing. It just is what it is, which isn't much, either way.

    • rachel says:

yes of course, thats why its a PLAYBOY yoga video, its sexually neutral, and its the viewer – duh !

  39. Michael T says:

oh, and as an EJ reader, I certainly wouldn't mind if the more elitist and judgmental elements were to go away. even Yoga must be subject to Viveka and Vairagya. even Yoga must be a source of humor. if this kind of thing would bother you enough to leave, then perhaps you are taking your own beliefs, your own preferences, and your own tolerances, a little too seriously.

    • Michael B says:

Loved your comment(s), Michael. On the one hand, I could relate to the people who wre outraged; on the other hand, I thought to myself: what would the Dalai Lama (or Buddha, even) say about this video. Of all the comments I read, I felt yours were the ones that most reflected Wisdom. Just doesn't feel right to hate, ya know? Does this video "successfully" promote sexploitation? I don't think so. I can definitely imagine several viewers coming to this video for prurient interests, and leaving (at least eventually) with an evolved consciousness.
So often I read comments about learning to "love our bodies" along w/comments from people who become enraged at "pretty" or "sexy" people. Heck, they're people, too, and usually can't help being attractive. Beauty of physical form does indeed exist in the natural world. Jealousy, envy — not enlightened poses.
