“Love is something you give away. But unlike other things, the more you give the more you receive in return.” ~ Shel Silverstein, The Giving Tree
Some many years ago, I remember reading the story of a young child—who was just barely four years old.
The story was part of a contest of sorts, being judged by author Leo Buscaglia, and with the purpose of trying to find this world’s most caring child.
And in their search, they came upon the littlest of hearts tucked quietly away within the most wonderfully endless of spirits.
The little boy had been found curled up and nestled into the lap of his elderly neighbor—a man who had just recently lost his wife. The man had been sitting there, alone and crying. But thankfully now, he had this beautiful boy to hold gently in his arms.
When the boy’s Mother later found him there, she asked him what it was that he was doing.
And this littlest of boys, with the biggest of hearts, said simply, “Nothing, Mommy—I just wanted to help him cry.”
I think love is just this way—it comes upon us like a gentle wave, washing through directly to our spirits and prompting us to do those little things that matter most of all.
And, quite often there is no ‘why‘ or ‘how‘ or ‘where shall we go from here.’
In fact, in those cases requiring the most unconditional of loves, you’ll find that the words are just not needed.
I believe this to be the most perfect kind of love—one that just knows, and is endless.
And the more of our hearts we can share on this way, the more filled they will be in the end.
