"Good news"? Obama must be on a political suicide mission. He just put seven critical states seriously in play at a time when he's already lost a good 7 points to Romney in the major polls, and is basically, now losing, if you follow "likely voter" polls (those are the polls that count, more than polls based on "registered voters").

The upside benefits – running to gay liberal Hollywood this week to raise cash, or thinking that you will rally the base come November is dwarfed by the downside, I think. He could easily have waited until later on this, later in the campaign, and even after re-election. Politics does require impulse control, even if sex and yoga do not?

The only one in or near the Obama camp who seems to have a sober perspective on what's happening now politically is James Carville, the mastermind behind Bill Clinton's come from behind 1992 victory. He is rightly warning the campaign that it's headed for defeat.

Enjoy the euphoria while it lasts.
