A Meeting that Is Forever.

Recently, I’ve reconnected with some old friends. We’ve had the experience of immediately meeting each other at a very deep level despite having parted ways and not seen each other in many years. That’s because our original connection was not merely at the level of the personality. It was at the level of the soul. And I believe that once you have truly met another that deeply, it’s a connection that lasts for eternity.

Most of our relationships are not that deep, even if they may appear to be. For example, we may love our blood relatives—our parents or our children—very, very much, but still not necessarily be bonded at the level of the soul. We can share a lot of history with other human beings and still not be connected at the deepest level. We can have lovers with whom we’ve shared passion and profound intimacy and the sense of a connection that at least felt as if nothing could be deeper—and then, for one reason or another, drift apart. Then, if we meet our former lover years later, we may have the strange and sometimes disturbing sensation of there being literally no connection any more.

How can such a thing be? How can we love another so deeply and then find that love and connection to be gone, nowhere to be found? I believe it’s because the connection wasn’t at the level of the soul.

Soul connections are eternal. Every other relationship we have, no matter how sweet, kind, intimate or apparently meaningful, will in the end be revealed to be only temporary. And this truth can be hard to bear, especially when we experience this in relationship to people we have felt very, very close to. It’s only when we meet another in the mutual recognition of life’s ultimate mystery, that liberating metaphysical truth which transcends anything and everything relative, that we experience a connection that is forever.

I met my last spiritual teacher, the great HWL Poonja, in 1986 in Lucknow, India. I’d been a very earnest seeker and when I met him I was a very ripe fruit. After spending three weeks in his company, going for walks, asking many questions, and taking meals together, his powerful spiritual influence catalyzed a transformation in myself at a soul level that has remained with me ever since. For that greatest gift that can be given, I owe him everything.

Life unfolds in mysterious ways. After five years, my teacher and I came to loggerheads. Philosophically we were no longer aligned and, painfully, we parted ways. Twenty-four years later, on the anniversary of my first meeting with the master (who had since passed away), I had a completely surprising experience. I was walking towards my house, my mind dwelling on practical concerns, when suddenly my teacher appeared before me in all his glory.

He wasn’t physically present, but in that mysterious domain beyond the mind and beyond time his bodily form appeared, surrounded by light and energy and a current of love and bliss that were the hallmarks of his gift to me. I have no doubt that this was his soul essence. He was no longer physically in this world by that time, but our connection was deeper than time or space or history… or even philosophical disagreements.

I don’t consider myself to be a naïve or superstitious person, and this event took me completely by surprise. I almost fell to my knees in awe and wonder. I’ve never experienced anything like it, before or since.

The two old friends that I’ve recently connected with were not merely friends. They had been very close students of mine and we had also come to a parting of the ways. Life and the passing of time had brought us back together. In that coming together, the immediacy of our bond was surprisingly palpable and apparent. Our connection was eternal. From the perspective of that mysterious domain beyond the mind and beyond time, our differences seemed superficial, irrelevant and relative.

I hadn’t seen one of these individuals in 25 years, and within seconds of reconnecting, it was like no time had passed. Our mutual love, admiration, and respect for each other seemed to be untouched by the intervening years. How marvelous and how joy-filled was our reunion. How free from history was our heart connection, how rooted in the infinite was our bond. Once you really connect at the deepest level, the level of the soul, it’s forever.

I believe this to be true..Lately I came across an old friend whom I always felt was my soul mate. After seeing him again I still felt that vibe in which I got from no one else. To me, it was a confirmation that I was RIGHT..I don’t believe we are meant to be together because of it. I can just treasure the fact that we crossed paths leaving a pleasant contentment with my soul Forever!!

Even though it wasn't forever, I am glad we met.

Has anyone done real research about this phenomenon? I am interested in understanding how and why this happens. I have experienced, but am in a stage that nobody understands, and I can’t explain. Deeply affected and trying to make any sense of it.

This is a fantastic article. I have experienced these connections throughout my life (yet, only within recent years have I truly understood and been able to acknowledge them). The most rewarding and cherished moments in life is when we can connect with other's in an intimate way (a very powerful experience). The hardest part is knowing when these relationships have served there purpose and allowing yourself to LET GO and keep moving forward – which fosters growth on both sides (allowing people to find and discover their own truth | purpose | meaning). I have several of these examples and continue to learn how to experience this kind of connection.

I have this type of connection & it is Divine. There isn’t anything superficial about this kind of bond. There isn’t anything involved in a connection like this but love, respect, appreciation & admiration.♡

Do you think a soul connection can be actively achieved? Or are we just lucky when we find them? I know I’ve had those connections, and am aware of that level missing from others. Can it be fostered?

    anonymous May 20, 2015 1:55pm

personally i do not believe it can be actively achieved, i also do not believe it has anything to do with luck. as long as you are aware that these eternal relationships exist they will find you but not necessarily in the capacity you expect. that is just my humble opinion. 🙂

Yet, the current scientific paradigm doesn't recognize this spiritual dimension of life. We're told we're just the activity of carbon and some proteins; we live awhile and die. And the universe? It too has no meaning. It has all been worked out in the equations – no need for a soul. But biocentrism – a new ‘theory of everything' – challenges this traditional, materialistic model of reality. In all directions, this outdated paradigm leads to insoluble enigmas, to ideas that are ultimately irrational. But knowledge is the prelude to wisdom, and soon our worldview will catch up with the facts.

it is only the body that carries it around that can be lost. (female) I usually somewhat associate it with a conscience. But more that the soul feeds off one's conscience. The soul is something you can 't see, butyou can kind offeel it. It is something no one really knows how to control, but it's a feeling thatyou can get when doing ...

Lydia Johnson Apr 27, 2017 10:20am

me and my dad (not biologic) live in different countries and we always get sick with the exact symptoms in the same time. Could that be that our souls are connected?

Aditya Sukumar Dec 26, 2016 8:42am

This is funny, No one really knows the soul and what its made of, yet we talk of concepts that connect to the soul. This "soul mate" fundamentally doesn't exist. The soul is limitless and infinite in nature. How can something infinite be related to the personality, it's mind, changing emotions and body? All of this arises from. The assumption that the soul is individual and "unique"... But seers who've spent years in silence and sitting with themselves have figured out the YOU or the Soul is limitless and is only. One infinite. Intelligence experiencing itself through 7 billion bodies and another trillion organisms

I have gained this soul connection. Don't seek it, for the love of God, for your sanity and your health. We live two different lives and I don't know what the future holds for us, this is why you should never seek it, because you want that person so so badly but they can live a different life. It is very powerful and fills your inner being with extreme pleasure the deeper you connect. I warn you most severely not to seek it. Only God can grant it. I know when she is on the phone wanting to communicate, I have known certain things before they happened. Now I am in a grave situation because I could not love another woman as much as I have this soul connection.

I have a soul love whom I met when I was 13... Not a soul mate.. A soul love.. It's far more powerful and deep and as old as time itself... We have had over 30 years apart, and finally meeting again, our connection is as strong as it was back then...
