You Did Not Know Me When… {Poem}

James Morely/Flickr

You did not know me when
men were known to turn
their heads in my direction
You did not know me when
my eyes were bright with wishes
and dreams and fantasies.
You did not know me when
I wore my heart on my sleeve
and it was there for all to see
and there for anybody’s taking
You did not know me when
I still believed in fairy tales
and happily ever after endings
You did not know me then
But you know me now
that I realize that eyes that see
with only lust mean nothing
but emptiness and loneliness
And you know me now
that I have learned at last
to guard the treasures of my heart
and that trust needs to be earned
and not just given away for free
And you know me now
that I have come to see myself
and the power that my own love
can bring to every hour of my life
And you are with me now
that I have learned that I can write
the wondrous story of my life
and all my new beginnings
and my happy never ending
And you are with me now
to celebrate in gratitude and joy
all the wisdom and the beauty
that I have finally found
and I am grateful it is you
and I am blessed and awed
that you are with me now in love
