The Holidays Are Not All About Giving

With the holiday season upon us, we can easily fall into to business of shopping, buying and giving. It’s a beautiful thing to give and share with others, but it’s also a beautiful thing to receive. Being open to receiving be challenging for some many of us because it requires a certain level of openness, vulnerability, and the ability to put our guard down.

Many of us get caught up in the hustle and bustle and glitz and festivities of the holidays that we forget to be open to receiving. Receiving does not have to mean material things or objects. Receiving can mean being open to someone’s love, kindness, thoughtfulness or care. To fully feel in your body what it feels to be loved, to be cared for, to be appreciated. Many of us have a hard time being open to receiving and fully feeling when other’s offer pars of themselves, whether it’s through words, gestures or gifts, because deep down inside there may be a part of us that feels we are not worthy or not enough.  It’s important to acknowledge this part of us and let this part know what we are enough, that we are worthy and deserving of receiving love. And yes, saying this statement once won’t instantly heal the wound that keeps us from fully knowing our worth and value but this can be a powerful step in the direction of self-healing and love.

With this in mind, I hope that this holiday season, you can make the conscious effort to be present and allow yourself to feel what it feels like when some offers something to you. Allow yourself to experience the love, kindness, thoughtfulness, and care of the other person to flow through your body. Instead of automatically responding or needing to say something when someone offers us something, give yourself a moment to experience the feeling. Being present and open to taking in what is being offered has the beautiful potential to create a strong intimate bond or connection full of love and care. Give yourself a chance to be truly present and feel and experience the magic of the holiday season. Give yourself a chance to practice feeling worthy and deserving of love.
