An Ode to Those with a Psychiatric Diagnosis.

You are not a diagnostic code.

You are not just a name on a caseload.

You are not mentally ill.

You are not disordered.

You are not depression, borderline, bipolar, or anxiety.

You do not have to wear these labels.

You do not need to fix yourself.

You do not need to apologize.

You may set these diagnoses down.

You may free yourself.

You may smile again.

You may turn toward the sun.

You may walk the path of healing that does not begin with a page number.

You can be a poet.

You can be a mother.

You can be the sunflower that drinks the teachings of this world.

You can stand ever so brightly—just as you are.

This is your identity.
