Are you struggling to pinpoint your speciality otherwise known as your business niche? Are you guilty of changing your Instagram Bio an embarrassing number of times? It may be time to change up your strategy for finding one. 

A niche at the end of the day helps a business owner stand out on social media, especially in a saturated market.

After helping over 80+ entrepreneurs in the past year I’ve highlighted six strategies that can help you arrive at the answer to your niche.

 

• Observe What People Come To You For

Our phones are inundated with text messages, social media notifications and emails by both family and friends. While we are quick to take professional connections seriously, I advise my clients not to rule out family and friends as helpful market research resources.

For example, if you’re a life coach and everyone in your circles reaches out to you for relationship advice then this can signal a new niche for you. Maybe you would excel as a relationship coach.

Or if you’re a virtual assistant, but all your family members and friends ask you to help them with their emails then maybe you should focus on email marketing as your expertise.

I remember running in circles as a life coach not attracting clients. The second I changed my niche to storytelling, I fell into true alignment and two clients that same month reached out to me. This is largely due to the fact I’ve always helped people with writing around me but never thought of monetizing the skill.

 

• Do Market Research

One of my favourite tricks when coming up with content ideas is to look at Facebook Groups and see what problems keep popping up. If I find a problem that keeps coming up in a Facebook Group, I look at it as an opportunity.

I remember I was certified as a life coach and it seemed so many people were struggling to tell their story in my program’s Facebook Group. As a journalist at the time, I jumped in to offer my expertise in the form of free-market research calls. The more I talked with people, the more I learned how valuable my niche in storytelling was.

 

• Review All Past Client Feedback

Sometimes the answers to your niche are in front of us in the form of client feedback, but we overlook it.

As I was helping people unlock their brand story, I started to realize I was connecting the dots in their life experiences as well and helping them unearth their niche. It felt like a spark of divine inspiration as I now had a second niche to work with. Suddenly there was an entire market to step into based on my skills.

I remember one of my clients, a social media influencer, said, ”Dhara listened to my story and helped me find a way for me to help other people.”

Suddenly I had another reason to keep branding myself as a Storytelling and Niche Coach.

 

• Review Your 9 to 5 Experience

Another avenue you can look for clues to your niche is in your 9-to-5 resume. I remember a client I worked with originally had a niche as a healing and wellness coach. However, after we had our coaching session, I realized this woman was a powerhouse business strategist who helped Fortune 500 companies unlock their next revenue level.

This niche helped her step into her authentic self, and she was able to secure her first client.

 

• Try New Projects and You’ll Find Answers

One of the first ways the universe started signalling signs of my calling as a storytelling and niche coach was when I randomly found a freelance task outside my daily 9 to 5 job.

I’m a person who must have more than one activity happening in her life otherwise I tend to get bored. If you’re the same way I recommend taking up random freelancing tasks on Upwork or Fiverr to explore your skills. You’ll not only make extra income but gain greater clarity about what type of work lights you up.

I remember helping someone repurpose her resume and statement of purpose on Upwork for a career change. As I dug through her life experiences and helped her extract a powerful brand story, I learned this was a skill I could help so many more people do!

Now as a Storytelling and Niche Coach I help entrepreneurs, in the same way, I helped her!

 

• Look At Your Story

Finally my top method of helping clients find their niche is interviewing them and studying the patterns in their life stories.

By learning all they’ve been through and holding a safe space, I help them connect the dots in their life experiences and unearth their niche or at even a deeper level — their life purpose.

At the end of the day, it’s very hard to pick a niche out of the blue and stay loyal to it if you aren’t emotionally connected somehow. On the days you have ups and downs in your business journey, a personal connection to your niche inspires you to keep going!

As someone who felt like an outsider truly peering in the ability to sit down with people one-on-one and listen to their life stories empowers me! It feels like my story of feeling like I didn’t have a clique or girl group growing up came full circle. My ability to instead connect with people one-on-one and look at their life from a bird’s eye perspective allows me to cultivate soul friendships.
