The medical profession is very noble if we look at it from a patient’s perspective. If we look at it from a student’s viewpoint, it requires a lot of hard work. However, we are here to discuss how medical professionals look at their jobs and what keeps their clock ticking! Why they do what they do? I will share with you the reasons behind their everyday motivation. It will explain to us a lot about character and how important is to have a sense of purpose in life! Unless and until we cannot satisfy a legitimate sense of purpose, we cannot carry on with our jobs or businesses. The lives of those without an objective are meaningless. Each one of us has their reasons to believe in what they think and strive to achieve. One can’t truly function or generate optimum performance if there is no target or goal in mind.

History and the Current Situation of the US Healthcare Setup

Besides being study-intensive, becoming a healthcare professional puts loads of responsibilities on our shoulders. They are taking care of sensitive matters relating to human health. It is the nature of their work that demands serious attitude. US healthcare is going through a transition at the moment to optimize it for the best interest of the Americans. Meaningful Use, MIPS, Medicaid EHR Incentive Program, are all part of this transformation from volume-based to the value-based reimbursement system. Moreover, the healthcare setup is like the backbone of a country and the United States is well-aware of that. As long as Eligible Professionals are fulfilling the new requirements, they will be rewarded at the end of the evaluation period for playing an anchor role in improving health outcomes and cutting down the costs of care.

Behind every success, there is motivation. Since medicine demands more intelligence than the average citizen can offer, not every person can become a doctor. The pleasure felt by healthcare professionals is inexpressible when a sick person regains health. They can only feel it in the warmth of a hug, a reassuring hand-shake, a little eye gesture, or it can be a nod. At that very moment, they realize all those years of study and hard work have paid off.

Let’s look at the factors that can lead them to their destiny of becoming world-class healthcare providers.

Youth

Today one of the most endangered species is the youth. Before we start judging the reasons behind the endangerment, we must highlight the positives. There is more technological maturity in the teens nowadays. They can think creatively and apply those ideas in real life because they have access to latest resources. Each one of them must have a clear route towards their goal, and we should all pitch in and help them in achieving it.

Although the population of America is growing old, we still have a considerable number of kids and adolescents who may need a bit of guidance. Mostly, they just want to improve their lives and in pursuit of a better life, they end up taking the wrong direction. It leads them into the world of drugs and other unlawful activities. It is also an indication that our youth is looking for objectivity in their lives so they can turn it around. When there is so much potential in them to do better and live better, why can’t we just tend to their needs and wants?

For some doctors, to change the ways or habits that can lead the youth onto a destructive path can be a significant motivating factor. Every child born has the right to live to their real potential. As a medical professional, working with communities who are vigilant and actively playing their part in youth development can make the difference. When we look around, we know and see many adolescents capable of doing a lot more and living up to their true potential. Someone needs to intervene and take them to the next level which they truly deserve! It only needs a little bit of nurturing and maneuvering. This drive to help the youth becomes the motivational element for some healthcare professionals. They proactively participate and work on measures for the development of youth.

Tears of joy

When someone asked a doctor, what made him choose this profession, he narrates the story of a patient who came in a seriously bad shape. The patient couldn’t speak English nor did the doctor talk in patient’s mother tongue. However, the doctors understood the medical conditions of their patients. They also called an interpreter, and the family collaborated as well. The patient got well, and the doctor was pleased to see the patient recover. He was happy and gave him a hug as a gesture of gratitude. The doctor knew at that moment exactly why he became a doctor.

It is the connection between medical professionals and the patients, as fellow humans, that drives them to serve and help others unconditionally. It is the most heartfelt empathy one could ever offer to another person.

Children

Some of the people in medicine have infinite love for kids. The doctors treating the children (the pediatricians) have that sort of motivation. The candle to satisfy our sense of purpose keeps on burning brightly until a significant event changes everything. A trauma or an extraordinary experience can affect our drive or will to succeed and survive altogether.  However, if things are running smoothly, it is the excitement to connect with our purpose every day, which keeps us going. As soon as the doctors help sick children find relief, the experience becomes productive and fulfilling. It is like food for the soul. We can never feed our souls physically but somewhat invisibly by fulfilling our goal.

Working with the human body

It is a fascinating creation – the human body. Our skull has 29 different bones, and our brain can store information that equals four terabytes on a hard drive. It is simply astounding!

Pyramids and Eiffel Tower are considered the human-made wonders of the world, but if anyone asks my opinion, humans are the most real wonders of this world.

The journey of discovery and self-exploration leads students on the path of medicine. Some of them say they take every patient as a challenge and they don’t rest until they find a permanent cure for them. National Institutes of Health (NIH) conduct research at a national level. Some of the doctors may choose to become scientists and enter the study in pursuit of a cure. Finding a vaccine for cancer or any other life-threatening disease becomes their purpose. There is a strong sense of purpose behind every medical professional.

Just for the sake of it

Some of us don’t know the reason behind our current state of affairs. Some of us may find relevance after they have achieved their current status (It can be a successful job or a running business). It is not weird because it happens to most of us. We are unaware of the results until we witness them hands-on. It is only after successfully treating a patient; they feel the high of making a difference in someone’s life.

That feeling of turning someone’s life around for the better is seriously addictive, and the doctors admit they couldn’t have chosen a better life than this.

There is always a bright day after a dark night.

“I should have been a pair of ragged claws / scuttling across the floors of silent seas.” ~T.S. Eliot

A quote from a poem by T.S. Eliot! It refers to his mental state at the time when he lacks motivation and fears ridicule at the hands of those present. We are all humans and thus feel helpless at times. But it doesn’t mean we can give up. T.S. Eliot also had his moments, but his legacy is alive in the form of his work. On the whole, the presence of a motivational element or a factor is very crucial and naturally attainable. Even the little achievements and developing situations can add to it in a big way and help us search for it.

Conclusion

We must remember, we can achieve anything regardless of how difficult it may seem to be if our strength of purpose is strong enough.

I am new at the journal. The write-up is highly motivating and encouraging. It seems like doctors are also humans after all without complex motivational roots.
