I ended up in Burlington, Vermont last night with some of my Goddard friends in a post-residency daze. Well after dark, we approached an old turn of the century two-story with standard Burlingtonesque architecture. The overgrown, unruly late summer sunflowers in the front yard were a nod to the impending fall soon to arrive in the North Eastern coast. The air was cool and crisp.

Two young guys sat on the small front porch ringing in their Friday night with quiet celebration and cheerful laughter. I was immediately transported to my early twenties when the majority of my porch sitting took place.

Here in this 5+ person home (serving as a hostel for some of its many inhabitants) I found much ingenuity. This was clearly a house of rebellious minds who seemed to grow and flourish despite post-college confusion and societal conditioning. Why falter with the pressure when you can do great things of your own making?

H.R. (aka Harrison, aka Harry) and Zack started talking about flyering, ways to save cardstock and the many upcoming deliveries for the week. My ears perked up. Alas, there were businessmen in our midst! Their bike messenger service- Crucial Couriers- was a grassroots business with a bright Burlington future.

“What is your mission exactly?” I asked. Their response was simple: We deliver 24/7 via bicycle and we’re the best and only in town. They started the project because they saw a need in their community. They took individual man and women power and put their idea into focused, pedaled action. Soon Crucial Couriers was up and running- delivering on bike all over the greater Burlington, Vermont area. Now they are pulling in almost enough to support themselves and expect business to eventually give a full-time, worthy income to its five member team.

Getting their name recognized in town is part of the fun. We sat around a softly lit living room decorated by mismatched sofas, brimming bookshelves and a much adored circular lazy susan coffee table circa 1972. Conversation bounced between upcoming events, marketing and other bike-centric discussions that included bicycle-blendering, local bike shop partnerships and increasing recognition and profits in the community.

These experiences remind me about living authentically. What if we all took our passions into the world and moved with them?
