Beyond yummy.

My new love for three sisters cereal seems to be contagious. My almost 10 year-old son can’t wait until we get more and is mad at Dad for finishing off the bag. Can’t get enough. Tried the Sweet Wheat, Honey Oaties and Cinnamon Sweets; the latter being my son’s absolute fave (don’t tell him, but I snuck some in the middle of the night).

Beyond its lip smackin’ tastiness, here’s what I–eco/health nut mom–love about this cereal (be sure to scroll down to the bottom for some crazy cereal packaging eco facts):

sustainable. made in the heartland using renewable energy

high quality. all natural ingredients including whole grain wheat, corn and oats. no phony artificial colors or flavors. no high fructose corn syrup. no partially hydrogenated oils.

responsible. three sisters ditched the cereal box. their cereal just comes in a “freshness saver” bag (zip-lock closure). That means less packaging waste and lower impact shipping. Oh, and they raised over $70,000 for Haiti relief in 2010.

to be organic someday. Why not yet? Here’s what they told me: “In order “In order to provide great value and everyday low prices to consumers, we do not have organic ingredients. There are plans to look at changing to organic, but there is no specific timeline as of yet.”

Three sisters cereal is sold exclusively at Whole Foods and is also available in Graham Crackerz, Honey Puffs and Marshmallow Oaties. Plus, they make Instant Oatmeal in brown sugar & maple; dark chocolate; cinnamon & apples and plain grain.

Crazy cereal box eco facts:

Each year there are about 2.5 billion cereal boxes sold in the U.S. Wow! 180,000 tons of paperboard.

Recycling helps, but only 44% of the paper, corrugate and paperboard packaging consumed annually still ends up in landfills.

If all cereal came in bags alone, instead of boxes with bags, U.S. households could reduce their paperboard use by 375 million pounds per year.
