Rick Perry: Call me Old Fashioned, But…

“I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian, but you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.

As President, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion. And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage.

Faith made America strong.

It can make her strong again.
I’m Rick Perry and I approve this message.”

Actually…needless to say…religious heritage didn’t “make America strong”…tolerance for religious freedom, our right to worship as we see fit was a fundamental inspiration for our founding fathers.

That said…needless to say…playing to the Christian conservative base when your leading opponents are Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich? Smart, if cynical.

One of many awesome Reddit comments, where they’re actively defending his right to speak such…blather:

“I feel like if I swapped the word christian and Muslim I’d be living in Iran.”

I, too, am a Christian. I am a yoga teacer in Austin, Tx I however I support my gay friends and loved ones doing whatever they wish, military or marriage. I support your right to practice your own faith and live your own life. And I think Rick Perry is absolutely horrifying. the essence of any faith should be love. He spews hate and I think when he says he is a Christian he is deluded and wrong. Some modern Christianity is very close to terrorism.

  2. Jennifer says:

Well, I flagged it for hate speech… Wouldn't it be awesome if the video got pulled for being Anti-Gay, etc.

  3. learningcurvesblog says:

Still trying to pick my jaw up from the keyboard…did he really say that about "gays"?? BTW, did I miss some memo about Christmas being cancelled because it seems to be in full swing in my town (as well as Hanukkah and Festivus).

  4. Louise Brooks says:

    Hi Jennifer,

Perry's ridiculous ad is nonsense and certainly homophobic. Alas, it isn't hate speech.

  5. passwordistaco says:

If you want your kids to pray in school send them to a private school.

People seem to forget a little thing called separation of church and state, Christianity may be the most common religion in this country but it doesn't mean majority rules. If tax dollars pay for it, religion has to stay out of it period end of story.

  6. Brad says:

The ad was inspiring and I’ve been waiting long time for this moral message and pushback against the liberalism and crap liberalism that has been creeping into our once great conservative country! It is NOT ok to be gay! You will NEVER force me to accept it!!!!

  7. Kate says:

A couple of quotes by Ghandi:

I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.

Satan’s successes are the greatest when he appears with the name of God on his lips.

  8. Lisa says:

Its comforting to know that while my poor, yoga teaching butt is busy stretching out a pot of rice and beans to feed my family while waiting for my food stamps to come through, Rick Perry will be putting the Christ back in Christmas. Gimme a break, maybe if he talked intelligently about actual issues, people would take him more seriously. I can only hope that one day he will come to terms with his sexuality.
