Do you believe the Bible is literally true?

The Chaser strikes again.

Takeaway: the Bible needs asterisks, so you can tell what’s old mythology and what should still be enforced. After all, killing adulterers is right by killing homosexuals.

ed’s note: to be clear, I attended Sunday School and everyone there was amazing. I have nothing but love for religion as long as it’s about love. If it’s about hate…not so much. We have two regular columnists (and many other occasional) who are Christian…you can read Reverend Roger Wolsey’s work here and Scott Robinson’s work here.

Loved it! I practice fundamentalist veganism. Thank God there's no bible for that demographic. As it is, we sometimes get so insufferable, we have to become different people just to get through the day.

even if we acknowledge the metaphorical truth of certain aspects of ancient texts like the bible, and thus liberate it from fundamentalist literalism, we still have to commit the necessary taboo of acknowledging PROGRESS – many of these ideas and beliefs come from a long time ago and are no only incorrect but archaic and brutal.

    this is really funny though!

  4. i must admit I love the Aussie approach…..

  5. John Harris says:

I see…, the argument goes that, the Bible says if a child disobeys his/her parents they need to be put to death (Exodus 21:7 and Leviticus 20:9). Apparently, even Jesus said it in Matthew 15:4. Therefore, if we can’t accept this teaching then why would we accept any other teaching, such as homosexuality being wrong? How does that prove that the Bible cannot be trusted historically?

Firstly, Jesus did not endorse the killing of a disobedient child. You clip is misleading. He merely used it against the Pharisees, (similar to the way used in this clip). The Pharisees where saying that Jesus’ disciples are not following the law by washing their hands before eating. Jesus answered, if you follow the law so carefully then why don’t you kill your children who have clearly disobey you which is a law written in the Old Testament. Jesus then explained what the law really means. In Matt 15:5-6 He explains that disobeying your parents means that they don’t look after them in their old age. So obviously we are talking about a fully grown person who understands accountability, not a child as portrait in the clip.

Matthew 15:12 tells us that the Pharisees were offended. This is not a surprise seeing that they were obviously behaving as hypocrites.

Later on Jesus calls these laws, man-made laws (Matthew 15:9). He accuses them of giving God lip service but their heart is far from him and quotes Isaiah 29:13. Jesus never endorsed it, He simply highlighted their hypocrisies.

Besides all this, it wasn’t a simply dishonouring of the parents that was the issue; it was much more than that. If a child does dishonour his parents (as described above), then the child is to go on trial before the elders, therefore not simply murdered (Deuteronomy 21:20). It wasn’t the case that the child dishonours his parents and then gets murdered. He is put on trial by the elders for a number of accusations including glutton (being vile) and being a drunkard. This decision is not made by random person walking down the street.

The clip is using this example to prove the Bible is wrong. This is absurd, because even if we disapprove of a certain command in the Bible, it doesn’t make the Bible wrong; it just shows that we think we are above God’s law. What’s next, should we remove capital punishment for convicted murderers (opposing Numbers 35:30-31), and then claim that the Bible is wrong because we decided to disobey? So we decide something is wrong or right and then use it to attack the Bible because it doesn’t match?

How are we making these decisions anyway? How are we deciding whether something is right or wrong outside the Bible? Therefore, my obvious question now is this; how do we know it’s wrong to kill a vulgar person who dishonours – or doesn’t look after their parents? Who decides? It is based on majority? Is it based on what the government tells you? HOW DO YOU KNOW?

Finally, the New Testament is a New Covenant that has in certain instances changed some laws directly such as an eye-for-an-eye (Exodus 21:24; Lev. 24:20; Deut. 19:21 compare with Matthew 5:39). Unfortunately to homosexuals, not only is this not cancelled in the New Testament but has been re-enforced (Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

Finally, regarding the Hunchback or a dwarf along with the disfigured face, deformed limb, defect eye, eczema (inflammation of skin) or scabs or crushed testicles or any other illness etc (Leviticus 21:19-21), it simply says they should not get involved in the offering of food. The Bible does not talk about putting them to death. It’s most likely medical precaution for genetic deformation.

Get your facts right before attacking Holy Scripture. The Bible is right including Noah's flood. How else would you get layers (it's called hydrologic sorting) or fossils (that requires water, sediments and quick burial). How disappointing that you know so little yet proceed to attack Holy Scripture which is 100% historically accurate!

  6. […] If the Bible is literally true, doesn’t that mean we should do all these things, too? […]

  7. Rebecca says:

Ummm….I don't mean to be rude, but have you ever heard of the ice age and the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs? I hate to break it to you, but a flood of instant and massive proportion is NOT the only way to achieve rock layers and fossils. Nice try, though 🙂

  8. John Harris says:

Thank you Rebecca; I am very aware of the ice age. Have you ever wondered how you could get an ice age using the evolutionary worldview bearing in mind the requirements for water precipitation and atmospheric conditions that cannot be too cold (otherwise it will not snow)? We would need a cold atmosphere (but not too cold) and warm seas at the same time to produce lots of continuous snow. What would cause this in your worldview and why? But that is exactly the environment that we expect to get immediately after a global flood and after the fountains of the deep have broken open along with multiple volcano eruptions causing fault lines to appear around the world (Genesis 8). The conditions after this would be perfect for an ice age. The Bible is historically accurate. For more information you may wish to read….

Regarding the dinosaurs, I’m not even sure you speak from a scientific factual position or just want to offer some hypothesis. Do you actually know what wiped the dinosaurs? Was it a comet impact or was an environmental event? Have you heard of Pele’s Hypothesis? Do you even know whether they are extinct? I don’t have time to explain all this to you but there are many good books about this subject such as “Dragons – A Natural History” or “The Great New England Sea Serpent”. There are thousands of recent reported and documented sightings. Please study and research before offering opinions.

Regarding rock layers and fossilisation, please share your scientific knowledge and explain how you would get fossilisation without quick burial and water (which is necessary for minerals to fill the cellular spaces and crystallisation). The Global Flood is EXACTLY how it happened! Do you prefer the hypothesis that dead animals courteously waited for millions of years whilst slow and gradual sediments covered the bones (using the uniformitarian view) and magically got fossilised without water? Would they have not disarticulated and decomposed (not to mention scavenged) way before that? Who is exercising faith now?

Rebecca, I may come across a little frustrated but that’s not because people don’t believe in the Bible or because of your comments. I am frustrated that our education system is breading closed minded, illogical and unscientific graduates that not only don’t believe in the Bible, but replace the truth of God’s word with the lie of evolution which is not just untrue but is actually anti-science. This dumb theory spreads across to geology, archaeology, cosmology, palaeontology, genetics etc. We are officially living in the dark ages!!!

Rebecca, please do not hesitate to challenge me with any scientific question but only if you are really interested in knowing the truth. The Bible does not conflict with science, only evolution does! In fact, you cannot even perform science without the Bible as it’s the only worldview that offers the uniformity of the universe which is necessary for scientific experiments (2 Peter 3:4, Genesis 8:22, Colossians 1:17, Hebrews 13:8), Hebrews 1:3). How does your worldview offer a guarantee such that repeated experiments return the same outcome? How do you account for the laws of logic and laws of physics without a law giver? How do you account for a coherent universe that owes you nothing which allegedly evolved from a big accident? I can! That’s because the Bible tells me that the God who created this universe created me in his image (Genesis 1:27) therefore, I should be able to comprehend and understand the universe He created. How do you account for all this in your worldview?

Rebecca, trust in God and know His word, it will set you free (John 8:31). It is historically and scientifically accurate!

    God bless
