gun control sandy hook scarborough

A video that seems to signal that change is coming.

Conservative Joe Scarborough condemns GOP Congressman for saying he’s “politicizing a tragedy” by calling for Gun Control. Awesome video.

This is the best thing I’ve seen on gun control this week: a Republican takes on a Republican. This isn’t about left or right: this is about protecting our public, and our children—not out of fear, but out of commonsense.

It’s not gun control. It’s assault weapons control. It’s 50 bullet clips control. It’s offering better access to mental health care. It’s protecting our children by emulating nations that have succeeded in reducing gun violence to almost nil, instead of gunning up even more (which we’ve done over the last week, and the NRA is very good at encouraging). It’s about a moment of strong, moral compassion for all Americans who remain free of partisan solidity.

An awesome confrontation between conservatives that seems to signal that needful, reasonable, commonsense change is coming.

Logic, facts, emotion harnessed by rationality…this was a joy to watch.

“Let’s talk about September 11th, congressman. Were there some changes made in this country because of the tragedy of September 11th? Was that just using a tragedy — 3,000 deaths — to try to make Americans safer? Do you dare come on my show and say I am using the slaughter of 20 little 6 and 7-year-old children; I’m using that for political purposes, Tim?”

“Tim, I’m not going to let you say that I am, quote, politicizing the slaughter of 26 or 27 children. But you said anybody that’s talking about this … Maybe some of us just believe that we have to do whatever we can — whether it’s looking at mental health, whether it’s looking at violent culture of video games and Hollywood movies, whether it’s looking at the proliferation of these weapons, whether it’s looking at what happened in Oregon, what happened in Colorado, what happened in Virginia, what happened in Connecticut, what continues happening, congressman.”

“So we can’t at least talk about guns without you questioning my integrity and saying that I’m using the death of 20 children to try to make life for my children a little bit safer? We can’t even talk about it without you coming on this show and insulting me personally?”

When even former opponents of gun control start looking to any and all likely partial solutions, it looks like America might be ready to finally do something and join the ranks of first world nations that do not see excessive gun violence in their societies.

  1. Reality Check says:

    Logic and facts?
Like the logic used after 9-11 that the best way to stop terrorism was to attack half of the middle east and spy on all the American citizens? Great comparison.
Or the fact that you don’t even know what an assault weapon is?
Or the fact that the previous ban did nothing statistically?
Or the fact that the areas in the U.S. with more gun control have higher crime rates?
Or the fact that a civilian with a gun stopped the Oregon mall shooting?
Or the fact that gun free zones advertise to criminals that they have a whole bunch of defenseless victims?
Or the fact that criminals get weapons no matter what the laws are?
Or the fact that crime rates usually go up when stricter gun laws are put in place?
No, not those facts, not actual logic. That would be too hard.

Any references for these alleged "facts" Reality Check? Were they perhaps supplied by the NRA? How about these facts…..

Or the fact that after a similar massacre in Australia, they instituted strict gun control and there have been no further massacres? Gun related crime dropped, And that suicide by gun dropped by over 60 percent?

Or the fact that other developed countries – Sweden, France, Germany, Japan – have strict gun control and have gun
related homicides in the hundreds while the gun related homicides in the USA is over 10 THOUSAND?

Or the fact that guns in every household make it EASY for criminals to break in and steal guns. That a shortage of weapons amongst the citizenry makes it HARDER for criminals to get guns? Laws MATTER, thats why we HAVE them.

  3. Reality Check says:

That will take care of the more guns less violence one. Or you can look at Washington DC and Chicago, both basically banned guns, and had much higher murder rates than the rest of the country.
I don’t think you need a reference for criminals will always get weapons.

The facts on Australia show that there are fewer gun deaths, but violent crime has not changed. Kind of a wash there really.

You have to look at all the statistics. gun crime down, violent crime up doesn’t mean much.

Do you know that real assault weapons are full automatic? Did you know that during the ARB one could still get a semi automatic rifle with a higher caliber? Just not one that had a certain look? Can’t provide a reference for that one because I don’t really know if you understand the difference.

Gun free zones are like putting up signs that say “terroism free zone” except they signal to criminals that they house a whole bunch of defenseless people, no reference needed.

Japan and Sweden are isolated, culturally homogenous and not a decent comparison.
Switzerland is number 4 in gun ownership, and one of the lowest in gun violence. If you are an adult, you have to own a gun.

If you look at gun ownership per capita, as it correlates with violence, it is all over the map. I could go on.

    The oregon shooting: http://www.examiner.com/article/media-blackout-oregon-mall-shooter-was-stopped-by-an-armed-citizen
And, I have never visited the NRA website, or read any of their material. I am generally anti-violence, etc. However, when confronted with an issue I use reason, and study both sides of the argument.
Take the guns away doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

You won’t wish violent crime a way. But if you take away decent peoples ability to protect themselves you leave them in the hands of cops, who are never close enough to help.

Oh yeah, you forgot England, and Mexico. Mexico tons of gun violence. Almost impossible to buy a gun legally. England, less gun violence, more violence. (almost half of the burglaries happen when someone is home, cause they don’t care, no guns)
I am not going to do all of your googling for you.
All you need to do is watch out for statistical manipulation and you will find that everything I have said is true.
