Mortal. {Poem}

I am but a slave.

The beat of my heart,
yearning to escape this shell,
pounding against my chest,
threatening to burst through and leave me to die.

The sweet promise of death
brings tears to my eyes,
as I imagine floating, flying,
free of fear.
And yet I feel fear, for what does nothing feel like?

Such promise life held in my early years.
But I’m naught but flesh and bone.
