You & I. {Poem}

How fitting that it was there in the woods
Amongst the trees where our souls belong

Our breath vivid in the crisp autumn air
Your eyes shone in the moonlight

Once again a fire burned in my soul
In your hand you held the only match

We both knew we would never be the same
Though I don’t think either of us wanted to be
You and I—
Like snakes, we shed our skins in preparation

Like fresh tracks in the pristine morning snow
We have been a long time coming, you and I

The fire you made crackles and pops
I throw more pine cones in for good measure
Fire doesn’t mix with much
Just earth, just you

I’ve always been a runner
Then again you’ve always chased me

But now It’s time to stop chasing each other
Leave that to the moon and the sun
Back down to this earth we must go
For now, we will be back here again one day

Soon the spring will come
Our roots will grow deeper into the softened earth

Like wind through the pines
our love will be heard, our love will be felt
As soon as spring comes, the snow will fall again
We have no fear, for the fire will always rage

Someday, our children will bury us in the snow
You and I, beneath the towering pines
Hand in hand
The wind will always blow
