How to find our Personal Advocacy Style & make the Biggest Impact.

These days, we may hear lots of language about being an advocate.

At first, it may seem as if we should be an advocate for every single issue we hear about in the news.

Whether it be equality, climate change, or any other popular topic you hear circulating the globe, it can be overwhelming to know where to put our time and energy.

While all of these issues are important, we may find it easiest to start small.

If you wish to become a better advocate, here are some simple steps:

Find Your Passion.

We can support a variety of causes (in small ways) by posting on social media and addressing those issues, should they come up in conversation, but if we wish to become a true advocate for a cause, it should be for something we are passionate about.

If we have a personal connection to the cause, we’re even more propelled to fight for it. Perhaps we want to help victims of sex trafficking, or maybe animal activism. Whatever it is, it would be wise to pick one or two topics to be knowledgeable about and go “all-out” for those causes.

This way, even when advocacy becomes tough, you will know you are fighting for a cause that you are truly passionate about.

Stay Informed.

As an advocate, it is crucial to stay informed about our cause so that we can inform others.

We don’t need to know every single detail, but the more knowledgeable we become, the better impact we will have. It is important to do our research while advocating for a cause. On our journey, we may come across people who support the opposing side.

In this case, it is beneficial to be as educated as possible so we can support our side with research-based evidence.

Choose Your Advocacy Style.

When we think of advocates, we often imagine crowds of people engaging in protests and holding up signs. While this has certainly been a way many people have fought for their rights, it is not the only type of advocacy.

If we’re not someone who likes engaging in large crowds, there are still ways for us to actively advocate for an issue. Let’s say we excel in writing. We can use those talents to begin a blog and advocate on social media.

Perhaps we’ll even be asked to contribute to local newspapers. Whatever our personality is and whatever talents we possess, it is best to match those up with our advocacy.

By finding our advocacy style, we will be able to make the most out of our significant impact.
