Seoul Yeongdeungpo Technical High School, led by head coach Kim Jae-woong, won the championship by beating Seoul Boin High School 2-1 in the final of the 59th Presidential Geumbae National High School Soccer Championship held at Jecheon Sports Complex in North Chungcheong Province earlier this month. This is the first presidential gold medal win since the founding of Yeongdeungpo Technical High School.

Yeongdeungpo Technical High School allowed an early run in the first half. However, in the second half, Kim Min-seong and Kim Tae-won scored back-to-back goals and overturned the game to 2-1. As a result, Yeongdeungpo Technical High School won four competitions this year, including the Presidential Geumbae, following the Baekwoon-gi, High League, and National Sports Festival high school Seoul representative selections.

Director Kim Jae-woong said through ‘My Daily’, “Yeongdeungpo Technical High School has won all other competitions, but there was no such thing as the Presidential Geumbae. When I was a player, I only went up to the semifinals,” he said. Since I wrote a new history, many alumni of Yeongdeungpo Technical High School contacted me. I’m proud” and looked back.

Director Kim also graduated from Yeongdeungpo Technical High School. Coach Kim, who participated in the Presidential Geumbae as a player at Yeongdeungpo Technical High School in 1990, lifted the championship 33 years after he first stepped on this stage. It took a long time. Director Kim lamented, “For a long time, I lamented, ‘Is Yeongdeungpo Technical High School having nothing to do with the Presidential Geumbae? We are really proud of our players to win this year. My disciples made my dreams come true,” he said.

The joy of winning is short-lived. Yeongdeungpo Technical High School is busy playing the 2023 National High School Football League Wangjungwangjeon. Coach Kim said, “There are two competitions left this year. In the complete group stage, it competes with Seoul Kyunghee High School, Gyeongnam Masan Technical High School, and Taeseong FC. They are all outstanding teams,” he said. “The National Sports Festival starts in early October. I hope our players will finish the season well without getting hurt.”Coach Kim credited the four crowns to his students. He said, “There are many players with great potential in the third year. Baek Woon-gi, striker Kim Tae-won, who won the top scorer in the Presidential Geumbae, and defender Lee Ye-chan are all good. College teams and pro teams will be keeping an eye on him.”

Director Kim Jae-woong emphasized ‘basic and sincere’ as his guiding philosophy. Director Kim has been leading Yeongdeungpo Technical High School for 17 years. I live with the pleasure of watching my students advance to the professional level and play an active role. Representatively, Ha Seung-woon (Gwangju FC), Park In-hyuk, Jeong Ho-jin (above Jeonnam Dragons), Kim Jae-woo (Gimcheon Sangmu), and Kim Dong-soo (Busan I-Park) have grown up under coach Kim’s guidance and are currently playing on the K-League stage.

Coach Kim said, “These students are not very good players in middle school. However, after coming to Yeongdeungpo Technical High School, I grew up a lot and went up to a higher place. Didn’t you go all the way to the national team and the pros? As a leader, I feel very rewarded.”

Lastly, “The school supports our soccer team physically and mentally. The president of the foundation, principals and vice principals, and school staff all spare no support for the soccer team.
