Last week, New Zealand Parliament passed a bill approving marriage equality.
Before the final vote, the Pakuranga representative, Maurice Williamson, delivered a brilliantly hilarious speech on why the bill was getting his vote.
“All we are doing with this bill is allowing two people who love each other to have that love recognized by way of marriage.
That is all we are doing.
We are not declaring nuclear war on a foreign state, we are not bringing a virus in that could wipe out our agriculture sector forever; we are allowing two people who love each other to have that recognized….
I give a promise to those who are opposed to this bill right now, I give you a water-tight, guarantee promise: the sun will still rise tomorrow, your teenage daughter will still argue back with you as if she knows everything, your mortgage will not grow, you will not have skin diseases or rashes or toads in your bed; the world will just carry on.
So don’t make this into a big deal. This is fantastic for the people it affects, but for the rest of us, life will go on.”
~ Maurice Williamson
It’s really time that we stop making marriage equality into a powerful political tool, and that we realize it will all be okay—I promise it really will be—if we allow everyone the opportunity to affirm their love through marriage.
And apparently, when your country does legalize gay marriage, it is only appropriate to break into song.
After the bill was passed, the entire room joined in a rousing rendition of the Maori love song “Pokarekare Ana”.
(The woman who seems to be an object of attention in the video is the representative who sponsored the bill, Louisa Wall.)
