Someone Once Asked Her: Would He Still be Worth it? {Poem}

a_simple_path_to_letting_go

Someone once asked her

What was the central driving focus
of her life
before Him?

What was the thing that was all important?
Or the thing that was more important
Or the thing that she gathered herself around
Or arranged herself around?

What was
as compelling
as interesting
as beautiful, perfect or provocative
as this Him thing had become the most demanding
of things.
The most challenging of things.
The most daring of things
that transplanted every other thing
in her life.

It was what she talked about
what she thought about
even what she thought she had hoped for

It was what she made appointments for
went online for
and carried her phone for

(she might miss something)
(he might not love her anymore)
(he might not want her anymore)

Someone once asked her

What if
she took the word Him out of her sentences
and substituted another word
any other word.

Car.
Job.
Her art work.
Herself.

What other word would she make the subject of her life instead?
What other word would she give all her time and energy and thought to?
All her love and effort and the days of her life to?

Someone once asked her

Would it still be Him?

Would he be worth it?
