Small Donations Make a Difference During Rough Economic Times. [Modest Needs]

by on Feb 16, 2009

A wise woman once told me if you want something, give it away. Feeling like money is tight and yet have five dollars that you could spare? Share it with someone who needs it, and feel again like you have enough. That’s the idea I was reminded of tonight, while cooking dinner and listening to [...]

Mindful Valentine’s Day Gifts via ABC Home & Planet Foundation.

by on Feb 3, 2009

Ah, free of a romantic valentine yet again this February, it’s fun for me to consider all types of love and gratitude and how we use one word to describe the many different ways in which to feel this emotion. Or even to articulate how we feel about a store as I’ve done in the [...]

Boulder Workshop: “Making the Green Link: Everyday Sustainability” [YRG, Green Collaborative]

by on Feb 1, 2009

I was recently introduced to YRG Sustainability through one of its members, another NYC to Boulder transplant. A delightful gal who I bonded with over pricey Boulder rents seeming like nothing, the best coffee spots in town and of course, all things sustainable. She let me know about an upcoming pilot sustainability workshop put on [...]

Photo via terralingua.org I really enjoy making cards for friends and when I don’t have the time to construct something of my own, I seek out special cards to buy. Two Hands Paperie here in Boulder is a new favorite spot, and back in Brooklyn I was a loyal Scaredy Kat shopper. However I was [...]

American Apparel Unisex Ear Muffs.

by on Jan 11, 2009

Perhaps I’m missing my old hipster-haven home of Brooklyn, I’m not sure, but lately I’ve been really wanting to wear ear muffs. I knew that American Apparel had been adding accessories to the line, so when I couldn’t find a pair second-hand locally, I thought I’d give their website a check and, sure enough: new unisex [...]

Save Moby: Turned Away from an Open Admission Shelter, Sweet, Contemplative Dog Needs a Home. [Humane Society of Boulder Valley]

by on Jan 6, 2009

Moby. In his six years, he’s perfected the leg snuzzle to show his appreciation well. And now he’s looking for a new care-giver to receive his gratitude.  My friend Alyssa has been quite a foster Mom to him for the past five months but now he needs a long-term home. She describes a typical day [...]

The Lipstick Index: a Real or Imaginary Indicator of Economic Times? Plus Natural, Affordable Picks.

by on Jan 4, 2009

The other day I found myself feeling low and really wanting to buy a new lipstick. Not my usual neutrals, but a fuchsia shade in fact. Then I remembered something called the “Lipstick Index” that I had read about in the New York Times, the theory that in an economic downturn, women buy more lipstick. [...]

A Teen’s Plan for Darfur: Small Donations Purchase Stoves, Having a Big Effect on the Country’s Women.

by on Dec 27, 2008

I just read this hopeful story on CNN. Maryland teen Spencer Brodsky, 17, has started a program with CHF International to purchase fuel-efficient stoves for women living in Darfur. Women are at risk of violence when they seek firewood, a scare resource that often takes them far from their camps. The stoves burn 75% less [...]

Colorado Chautauqua Aims to Become the “Greenest National Historic Landmark in the U.S.”

by on Dec 27, 2008

When I think of sustainability principles in buildings, shiny and futuristic images come to mind of the new California Academy of Sciences, or the Helena in New York City where I used to work, or many of these LEED Platinum buildings of 2008. But green building practices are not only a part of new construction; [...]

Mad Men: Hot Show, Hot Actors, Cool Mindful Tie-ins [Jon Hamm, The Day the Earth Stood Still]

by on Dec 16, 2008

Mad Men seems to be everywhere these days. Finally, I had to see what all of the fuss was about…so I am watching the first season on Netflix. It’s our editor’s favorite show, and he wrote a commentary on bachelorhood with a link to a hilarious SNL skit which includes Mad Men’s star, Jon Hamm.

Pharrell Williams Enters into Partnership with Bionic Yarn, Creator of Sustainable Fabrics.

by on Dec 9, 2008

File this one under random, exciting and….brilliant. I’ve been following Pharrell Williams since I helped promote his first N.E.R.D. record back in my radio promotion days. It was just reported that Pharrell has partnered with Bionic Yarn as both an owner, investor and ambassador in the New York-based textile firm that’s developing sustainable fabrics created [...]

Gender Analyzer: is that a Male or Female Voice Behind your Favorite Blog?

by on Nov 21, 2008

While it may not be entirely accurate, this one’s entertaining. Gender Analyzer asks, “man or woman – who is writing that blog?” According to the site it was created simply out of curiosity and uses artificial intelligence (what does that mean exactly?) to determine if a homepage was written by a guy or gal.

Bike Safety: Making Resources Accessible to Beginners and Getting Past Fears. [Google Maps Bike There]

by on Nov 19, 2008

A Treehugger article caught my eye today. Entitled “45 Days in Jail for Driver who Rode Around with Cyclist on the Hood of his Car” it detailed an insane incident last summer of road rage in which the thrown cyclist held on to the windshield wipers of the enraged driver’s moving car. This of course [...]

Mayor Bloomberg’s Controversial Planned Plastic Bag Fee in New York City.

by on Nov 10, 2008

In Brooklyn, I lived across the street from a 24-hour natural products bodega (boy was I spoiled). I’d stop by in between regular trips to the Park Slope Food Coop, which banned plastic bags this summer. Everyone who worked at the corner store knew me as their neighbor and that I’d never take a plastic [...]

Check out Dave Rogers’ take on the same event in a previous post, complete with photo slideshow by Rusty Ralston.   Recently I was living in New York City, where I supported the national product launch of a mission-driven business called Kopali Organics. When I realized it was time to get out of the city [...]

Greenest Museum in the World? The California Academy of Sciences.

by on Oct 27, 2008

Get me to San Francisco to see this in person. After a $500 million dollar re-model, the California Academy of Sciences has recently re-opened its doors to the public to see the features that make the new structure a LEED Platinum building. Housing an aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum and 4-story rainforest, the most stunning [...]

Environmental Defense Fund’s Brilliant “Jargon Watch: Green or Greenwashing?” Tool.

by on Oct 17, 2008

Alternative Fuels: this term should always be used with the world “clean” or “green” or the term “low carbon” in order to distinguish it from high carbon alternative fuels like liquid coal. So starts the Environmental Defense Fund’s tool to help break through the jargon so often thrown around in our current election.

With the intention of “presenting clear, reliable and concise information on recent observations of environmental conditions in the Arctic, relative to historical time series records,” the results are staggering.

Video via The Onion: Obama hits McCain with brutal Constructive Criticism ads.

by on Oct 11, 2008

I’m working on my assertiveness. I know that I can be overly apologetic which is why I think I enjoyed this video so much on a personal level.  This is obviously a satire, but if I ever found myself in Obama’s position, these are the ads I’d almost be tempted to do. “Ads slam [...]

Have a Mindful, Green Halloween (Start with Fair Trade Chocolate and Eco-Friendly Costumes).

by on Oct 10, 2008

It’s estimated that in the U.S., we spend $5 billion dollars on costumes, candy and decorations for Halloween. Imagine the impact upon our wallets if we first bought less, and on the environment if we made different choices for the things we do purchase for the holiday.

Being vs. Doing, Spirituality vs. Activism? One gal’s search in NYC, an upstate ashram and the natural products industry.

by on Oct 8, 2008

As the grays of winter began to settle in, I retreated to Ananda Ashram in Monroe, New York, just about an hour drive from my home in Brooklyn. I was a few weeks into a national product launch for the natural products company where I work. While I’d been inspired—we were working to bring some [...]

Shepard Fairey’s Iconic Obama Images

by on Oct 3, 2008

Originally published in, like, June or something. I took the photo above yesterday a block from my apartment at 52 5th Avenue in Brooklyn. I just loved the image so much it literally made me stop in the street to take a closer look and then return with my camera later. Then, I had to [...]

How Will Lehman’s Collapse Affect the Environment?

by on Sep 16, 2008

I’m still trying to wrap my head around an email a good friend who used to work at Deutsche Bank sent to me to explain how Lehman’s collapse could affect the everyday person. But another consideration is also how it will affect the environment? I stumbled upon a potential answer to both questions in reading a [...]
